I'm wanting to add one more school of fish to my 75G aquarium. I want something colorful and not very delicate. If I can't decide on a fish, I was thinking of getting more tiger barbs.
I have 7 adult tiger barbs, and I was wondering, would it be ok to put small juveniles in with big adults? Would there be too much conflict there? Thanks!

Oh, and while I'm at it, would rainbow fish be ok to have with tiger barbs? I might go with them.... I'm still trying to decide!

Theoretically, yes you can put barbs and rainbows together. If you do this, I would recomend having a full school of rainbows pretty fast and pretty good initial size since the tigers are already large. I ended up just reselling my barbs and keeping the rainbows. It seemed their always 1 or 2 barbs trying to harass them at some point. One thing i did notice though, is Albino TB's almost never harrassed any of the other fish in tank and only sparred among themselves which was quite fun to watch. All the barbs would get in a circle and the two largest (both albinos in my tank) would duke it out for dominance. It usually happened right at lights out. Moonlights help to watch this if you ever get the chance. Never saw the normal TB's do this though, only the largest albino's.

I would think that if the newer barbs are at least half the size, they should be ok.

Rainbow sharks are somewhat aggressive, but I'm sure the barbs can take it. :p

Other colorful schoolers, perhaps harlequin rasboras? Cardinals or neons (I'm sure if you have enough the barbs won't do any damage. :p)?

Thanks for the input!

Tempestuous: I meant rainbow fish as in Australian rainbow, Boesemani rainbow, etc. Not the rainbow shark :p Sorry! Not really interested in the shark.
I do love harlequin rasboras. I've had them before and would eagerly have them again. None of the shops around here have any atm, but I might request they order them.

hi
over the past couple of years ive found that adding a single new young tiger barb to an established group of adults seems to turn the teeny one into a major terror!!! picking on the older guys constantly. first noticed this after getting a little newie to replace a sad loss from our original gang of 6 barbs. when the newie was added the original mob were the same age ( about 2 1/2 yrs old) the new one was less than 1/2 their size & she ran them ragged for weeks..............you could almost see them thinking omg who put this little s****t in here with us????? the littlie did settle after a few weeks though, and it was surprising i thought it would get picked on. :D
we've just had a similar situation again - sadly lost a tb from a group we got at the same time & age.........replaced her with a new little tb & my gawd this newie was a real terror not just chasing ALL the older barbs when he spotted them but actively seeking them out from where they were cowering in the plants and not letting any of the other tbs get any food if he could...........anyway this went on for a week & a half, hardly ever saw our other tbs (hiding hiding) up until tues night when new little tb had a serious spot of nose to nose combat with one of the biggies.............i think the biggie won cos now little tb is being chased constantly...................i was very surprised again cos i did think that it would be the small barb being chased but not so.
ive taken a long & winding tale basically to say if your adding a group of new little tbs to an older group you should be fine as i think the littlies will scrap & amuse themselves. and they always seem to settle down after a few weeks or so.
