ok so maybe Furry isn't the correct word but im finding it hard to describe. every few days some of the barbs in my tank have a slightly "mat finish" to them the light reflects of them differently and i have thought it could be fungal ar some disease but it comes and goes regularly if anyone can shed some light on this situation it would be much appriciated

Wow, your avatar is disturbing. You might want to post this in fish emergencies as your fish sound ill.

Are they generally male barbs that are doing such? mine frequently go through colour changes when they are "disputing" their position in the pecking order, they also do something very similar before spawning.
When the males go dark too show off, their red noses stick out massively, and they push all their fins out to the full extent to show off. You might find them nosedancing sometimes, which is very funny to watch. Almost like a pair of boxers squaring off, they sit nose to nose going round in circles and trying to shove each other around.

hi
ive noticed our tigers change colour slightly too.......seem to get darker at various times the green ones too. ( the green barbs colour varies from a medium green to quite dark - almost black colour) i know when they are sick they can darken but will then show other signs such as becoming listless & not behaving like a normal active barb. as said the colour change is very noticable when 2 barbs are having a 'nose to nose' fight with their fins stretched to full sail position.
im sure its nothing to worry about as long as your barbs are otherwise acting normally.

yeah they are acting fine but i didn't know about colour change. i rehomed them in to a larger tank and their colour was so good after only a period of 10 mins?
