I have 5 tiger barbs in a community tank, the rest of the tankmates are listed below on my signature. what are the chances of any of them actually laying eggs, and if there is any chance, what is the chance of them being fertilized and surviving?

now and then i see a few of my tiger barbs will look really bloated, kind of like they are carrying a load of eggs or something. then it goes away. i'm wondering if they are laying eggs, and they are just being eaten, or if they do in fact get bloating sometimes.

i figured that much, i was asking for a little more info. like, does it seem like my barbs are actually laying eggs, and i just don't know. forget about fry surviving, i know they won't. just wanna know if my barbs are producing eggs or is the bloating due to something else.

Well you could try getting a breeding net/tank and finiding out ;) If you have a male/female then there is a good chance for them breeding however like mentioned not a chance of survival with that many fish

My guess as long as theya re not acting like they are sick at all, that they are laying eggs in there and that is why you notice them getting fat and then they are skinny. I also have tiger barbs and albino tigers, and all of my females seem to stay fat. They are egg scatterers and prefer from what i have read to lay eggs in the plants. But like everyone else has said, they eat their own eggs as well as any other tank members will also eat the eggs. How many males do you have to girls? Sandy

I'm not positive about the male to female ratio of the tiger barbs... but i'd say i have 3 females and 2 males, or maybe it's 2 females and 3 males. i could be wrong, but i'm pretty sure i counted 3 bloated fish though, leading me to believe that i have three girls.

I answered your question in the breeding forum ;)
