Tiger Barbs- A good First Choice??

I am no newby to aquariums,having seven up and running with tiger barbs in one of the fresh myself I was wondering how hardy these guys are? I have only had the barbs for 2 days and I was planning on buying a few for a neice(??spelling??). Being that she is 6 and will probably not care for them as Great as others will they survive? Keep in mind there wont be any torture or anything parents will help out jus maybe bad water qaulity at times and a little over feeding(ahhh I remember feeding my fish when i was a kid i thought theyd eat forever....... lol guess not cuz they died!!) But I assure you she has a good heart and will only love the fish. Personally I am more into saltwater but now have a few frehswater tanks. My experience with barbs does not extend more than the two days I've had them and my gurlfriend thinks it might be a good idea to ask about them so I am doing as I'm told(I'm on a leash about -------- that long when it comes to her). I just really wanna know if they are good hardy fish or not.

Its my understanding that they are great little fishe, which are hardy, however i do know that they prefer to be in groups of around ten, so maybe a betta would be a better choice for your neice. As these little fish can get nippy and aggresive if in small numbers.

How big tank is it?

I agree that a betta would be a better choice. Also, the colours will probably be more attractive to her than tiger barbs. If the tank is big enough though (At least a 15G, preferable 20G) a shoal of about 8 zebra danios would do lovely. They're very hardy fish and always active making them fun to watch.

well the tank is 10g. And I talked to my girlfriend about it who of course said get a betta(my girlfriend is in love with them she has over 10 of them). So today we went out and bought a betta. Not my choice but it will have to do.

i had a betta witha whole wack of fish, and he did fine. I have had past experiences with tiger barbs as being fin nippers.
