Hello Folks ... :D

Breaking in a new 20 gallon using the fish method  ... I'm sterting to think fishless is the way to go :) ... anyway after two weeks was hit by an Ich attack in a brand new tank that now is being treated ( In fith day of seven day treatment with copper Sulfate at 86 F ) ...

The Barb was OK last night feeding and all but this morning became stuck to the filter .. a topfin filter ... he was having a tuff time in the tank kept getting restuck to the filter .. his pals kept attacking .. and he looked like a drunken sailor ... I had to remove him ftom the tank. No Ich spots though.

He now is in a half gallon container with aeration .. acting better .. tank Ammonia 2 ppm .. Can't say if I can keep him well in the container. Was it the Ich .. the Ammonia .. the filter or all three ??? Can't see returning him to the tank at the high ammonia levels ... the clean water i think revived him.

Any ideas ? :-(

Good Day ...

Your ammonia is the leading cause, and it's at a high level. The ammonia poisons your fish, slowly suffocating it which is why your fish looks like a drunken sailor: he's not getting enough oxygen. This weakens their immune system and makes the fish more prone to diseases(like ich). Your temp doesnt need to be at 86, i cured mine at 82 F with the medicine QuIck Cure and it dissappeared in 4 days flat. Unless you have a super powerful filter that sucks fish to it(which i doubt, tiger barbs are fast swimmers) your barb is probably having troubles swimming and gets stuck to it because it cant control itself due to the ammonia.
You can quickly resolve this if you have a friend with a cycled tank and just bag some of their water for the beneficial bacteria.

Yeah .. thanks for the replys. The Barb is not doing well .. I'm afraid  .. He will have to stay outside the tank ... maybe he will recover .. maybe not .. next time I am going to try the fishless method.

Good Day ....

Well the Tiger barb has passed on :-(

I have not lost a fish in twenty years ... then again have not kept fish in twenty years :fun:

Overall the Ich cure seems to be working ... we'll see .. but it cost me a small friend .. and who knows what lies ahead with this tank break in ... the fishless method seems to make more and more sense...

Anyway .. thanks for those that replied .. much appreciated. :)

Good Day ...

Hello Carnarsie ...

I started with 3 small tiger barbs .. 3 Serpae tetra and three small Giant Danios ...
