My understanding of tiger barbs is that they can be kept in a community set-up so long as there are no long-finned fish as they are notorious fin-nippers so your choices could be quite extensive.....
They are also need to be kept in groups of at least 6, ideally more as in smaller groups they are likly to be aggressive to other tank mates. In a larger group they keep their aggression 'in house' amoungst themselves sorting out the pecking order.
A similar looking species and much much more peacefull is the pentazona barb which may be worth considering (btw these are what I keep in my community set-up )
I have some Blue Gouramis, Bala Sharks, Swordtails, and Khuli Loaches living with my 5 Barbs and they do just fine. Someone took a huge bite out of one of the Bala Shark's tail, but that was a month or so ago and it hasnt happened since. Im not even sure if it was the Barbs, it was a pretty big bite. Theyre great fish though, really active!
