Threadfin Rainbowfish (iriatherina Werneri)

not kept them myself but just from looking at that profile and seeing your still cycling i'd say don't get them just yet.

they look pretty delicate so I'd wait until your tank's been running at least 6 months before getting them. gives you plenty of time to do your research and make sure your prepared though.

lovely looking fish

I've kept them before and they are a lovely fish. As with some photos though, they can be a bit misleading as sadly they don't colour up like that picture. They pretty much stay a brown colour even when they've matured.
Males make a beautiful display with their fins, almost like a scissor action, which looks quite impressive. Easy enough to take care of and a peaceful fish but as Miss Wiggle suggested, let your tank mature before adding any. :good:

yep i wasn't going to add any for a while i'm just doing loads of research to waste away the time my tank takes to cycle :(

its a shame they don't colour up like that, but its there interesting finnage i really like anyway

They have got beautiful fins. One problem you may have is finding females. I'm not sure why but they are really difficult to get hold of so you may end up with just males.

Would their be any aggresion with a male only group?? :/

These are Beautiful when matured, Most of the one's in shops will be the yellow or red's

Try and get some Blacks, Greens, Blues.

When you get a Dominant Male watch the transformation they go thru.

Damn, I must have been unlucky with mine. They never coloured up at all even though we were told they would when we brought them. :/

Yep the Dom Male, Becomes a Dark Gun Metal Color, with Black/Silver Vertical Stripes.
He gets a Bright Silver stripe running from mouth to tail, his top jaw becomes bigger and shines like i light. then his fins really color up.

Do the males need females to show off to in order to develop their best colouring? I'm pretty sure my Celebes rainbows do ( but they are of course a different family)

These are also really beautiful small rainbows ( although I think their more up-to-date name is pseudomugil furcatus). I've read differing reports as to how delicate/difficult they are, but having seen them various times in the flesh, they really do colour beautifully. Gorgeous.

Funny you should say that because i bought some 3 days ago and i was wondering the same thing.
