Hi all,

I have a BioCube with a 24 watt 10,000K CF bulb and a 24 watt Actinic CF bulb. I've had them for about a year now. I know these bulbs degrade over time, even though they "look" fine. A recent flourish of not so nice stuff on the glass leads me to think they are no longer supplying the proper wavelengths or whatever it's called. If you ask a fellow in a LFS they'll tell you to replace it, just because you asked! I prefer to ask here to get a non-commission based answer.... :)

Any thoughts?

if you have no plants in they should be ok.
the lights are only for your benafit

I have no plants - but I guess I should have mentioned the biocube is setup as a marine tank! I do have zoos and things, which I think use photosynthesis.

Are you talking about freshwater???? I agree that in freshwater the light is only important to see the fish if you don't have plants... Quite honestly a dim freshwater tank is more appealing IMO.

I would personally consider replacing them after a maximum of 12 months if you have either plants or stock that require special lighting.

That did it - seems that 12 months is a good rule of thumb.... Wow, what a difference!
!

The 12 month rule is ONLY a rule of thumb !! Modern tubes can last longer.... when you are familiar with YOUR tank, you will notice a change in plant activity and algae growth.
Dont be tempted to keep tubes "in stock" though... they are best bought "fresh" !
