I know everyone has their own thought of the right or wrong filter, but I am wondering what thoughts are on the Fluval U4. Good and (hopefully not) bad. I have a 50g tall saltwater tank.

You would be best putting this/seeking further advice in the marine section :).

I would say they are reliable functional filters for freshwater tanks, but woefully underpowered for any planted tank, even more so on a saltwater tank! I hope you have other sources of filtration and circulation or not much stock . Otherwise, disregard future advice from the store that sold you this filter for a marine tank.

The cartridges have a tiny amount of zeolite/carbon in them, which to be effective would have to be changed at least every couple of days really. The cartridges are really expensive IMO.

You would be better off with the biggest external filter you could afford, plus maybe extra circulation pumps depending on what species of fish you were keeping. An external is a bigger initial investment, but will save you money on changing over the media.

Corals area a different story filtration wise (need even cleaner water), so I'm assuming your tank is only for fish here :).

Here is the saltwater hardware section :good: : http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/forum/34-saltwater-hardware/
