Ok this weekend I have decided to remove my canister filter from my tank.

I have a 55g tank with roughly 27kg of live rock and a Deltec MCE600 skimmer.

I decided to do this as im now carbon dosing to get my nitrates down and have read untold reports that canister filters in saltwater aquariums are bad and nitrate traps.

Have I done the right thing or should I connect it back up?

Jay

Its not either right or wrong - I have never had an external as I have lots of live rock

your tanks not highly stocked anyway i dont think is it?

what did you have in there?

ideally id have reccomended you took half the meida out and then ran it turning it full off two weeks later

Stocking is:

1 chromis
1 chalk goby
1 yellow tang
1 regal tang (very small)
1 purple dottyback
4 damsels
2 clowns
1 cleaner wrasse
1 bengal cardinal
1 sand sifting star

several crabs and snails

We must have been reading the same thing!!
I have 2 100lph canister filters - removed the sponge from 1 last weekend and added carbon media net instead, which seems to be bringing the nitrates down well. Planning to remove the other sponge tomorrow when i do my water change.
Next job for me will be to tackle my bio balls!
