Well, you asked Slamster17, and I'm delivering.

Here are several pictures of Hunding, my newest betta. Synirr once mentioned that he looked like he might have wild type in him, but I would like to know for sure. By the way, Hunding also karate chops when he flares, really funny to watch! In addition, he has some metallic blue-green spots scattered on the top half of his body, which aren't captured well in my pictures.

I apologize for the quality of the pictures, it was taken with a camera phone. It doesn't matter what he is, he's still a lovely fish, but I'm still curious about your opinions. He is thriving in the 15g where Fasolt used to be. Long story about Fasolt, Wuv and I know his drama. ;) Hunding loves to lurk among the plants and watch the rasboras breed, to eat the eggs, of course. He's a sly one, Hunding is! :hey:

the pics arent bad for camera phone.
he looks to me that he is just a splendens that has a color pattern similar to a wild splendens. he is not imbellis as imbellis have green gill plates. where did you buy him?
nice fish

I found him at my favorite LFS in Champaign, IL. He was in a tank full of females! At first glance he looked female, but then I saw the gill extensions that males have, and he was flaring quite a bit. He also lacked some necessary "female" equipment. Good thing is that I got him for only $1.89, the price of a female betta in that store, pretty good deal. The person who helped me had the ominous task of separating the females from the males in that tank, as well as helping me with plants, so we had a good laugh about it. The person they get female bettas from mixes in short-finned males from time to time, which sucks because the guy who helped me is the only one who can tell them apart well, besides myself, so it's his job to separate the males and put them in the regular betta section. But I digress. So he's just a regular plakat splendens? So what would I call him? Plakat with wild-type coloration? Are hybrids between splendens and imbellis possible, is my next logical question? I don't think mine is, but I was just curious.

lol, id go with normal plakat splendens.
yes hybrids between imbellis and splendens are possible but i dont think you have one especially if he just came from a local breeder of some type.

nice plakat tho

That fish has some very pretty coloring.

lol Did you name that fish Hunding...after the meaning I am thinking? If so ..that's kinda cool.

No, I'm afraid I'm not that creative. Hunding is a character from Wagner's Ring cycle. He's a villian. Hund is hound in German, but I'm not sure that's what your mean. All my bettas are named from male characters in that opera cycle. I'm being a total :nerd: again. I'm missing two characters, Siegfried and Wotan, but I probably won't get them until I move back to FL. Actually, I'm missing Fafner too, but I've already had a betta named Fafner, and I don't see myself using that name again for a long time, though it is a great name. Siegfried and Wotan need to be extremely special bettas, and though all my bettas are special, I buying my time with these last two. I'm thinking either giants or even some different betta species for those names, but I'll mull it over when I get home. I know my limits, and I've reached it up in IL, and I have a lot of time to do research and make my final decision later. Patience is a virtue in this hobby.

lol no I meant from ...Hundings Hut.

Very nice though...and creative.

Ludwig built this garden pavilion at Linderhof in the late 1870's, soon after the premier of Wagner's Ring at Bayreuth in 1876. The Hunding's Hut was based on the stage set of Act 1 of Walküre. It was used for late night parties where the King's guard would relax with Ludwig, laying on bearskin rugs and drinking mead from drinking horns. These parties came under scrutiny during the inquiry into the King's sanity. It burned down during WW 2.

That's a great piece of information. Act I of Walkure is set in Hunding's house, and the Hunding's Hut was based on this construction from Act I. You learn something new everyday.
