in my experience, when a fish died, it was usually of some kind of sickness. i would assume it would be unwise to let your healthy fish feed on a corpse that was done in by some illness. i am of course new at this hobby, but doesn't seem like the best thing to do. I'd get rid of the body for sure!

There are several options when this happens with a small fish.

1. remove it from the tank, wrap it in papertowel or better yet place it in an old fish bag and throw it in the trash can.

2. Bury it in the garden or flower bed. Natural fertalizer!!

3. If you can be sure it did not die of anything other than old age....you could leave it for the fish to snack on, but why would you want to?? This is a fish you enjoyed watching while it was alive and to watch it be consumed by it's former tankmates is kind of not cool!!

I know, I know....this is the natural order of things in the wild, but an aquarium is not the wild!!

HTH.....

The only thing with flushing is there is a slight risk of introducing tropical diseases into native fish stocks, this could have devastating affects on local populations of these fish as they will have no imunity to the disease,it is best to discard of fish in the rubbish/trash like CM says.

I have been known to feed dead fish from one tank to larger fish in another but not fish that have died from disease (apart from neons that have died from neon tetra disease which cannot be caught by other fish),i dont have a problem with this as the corpse is swallowed whole with no mess,i wouldnt leave a corpse in a tank of small fish because they tend to pick at it and make a big mess which can cause water quallity problems.

Hi teknikz

In the higher temps of our tropical tanks, the breakdown of the dead fish is quite quick, which will lead to an extra load on the filter bacteria.
IMO if you see a dead fish in the tank, remove it.

I would take it out straight away to avoid changes to the water chemistry.... :/

ive got crabs.... jamacan red crabs in my tank not the other sort  anyways i would say that they clean up most of the fishy corpse but i still make shure that they only have it for a little while when it starts to rot i take it out. it will much up the bacterial load on the filter and stuff and increase the nirtates and stuff thu bad for the tank.

well the dead fishy has been removed.......didnt have much time to enjoy him....he's only been a member of the tank for a week.....and nothin looked wrong with him......the only thing i noticed was his colour had gone....but that happens when things die anyway

the only reason i was thinkin of leavin it in for munch was that it'd happen naturaly in the wld......anno theyre not in the wild.....but 1 of the points of keepin fish is to have them in an environment that would be similar to the wild
