This is terrible! Just horrible!

I've emailed Hagen before. I know I have one of their 11 litre tanks, but it was a gift and I use it for bettas. But they emailed me back with-

Thank you for your recent email, the goldfish on the boxes are fancy goldfish and not the common species of goldfish that you are referring to. Fancy goldfish can grow up to 9cm long but this can take years and are more suited to aquariums than ponds as they are not as tolerant as common goldfish to extreme low water temperatures. We also ensure that our aquarium kits come with adequate filtration to help prevent the build of of toxins. Unfortunately many people still keep goldfish in just glass bowls without adequate filtration.

Umm... 9cm??? What planet are they living on?

Just emailed them again with-

I emailed you before, and was suprised by your response. I enquired about why you advertise the 11 and 19 litre Eclipse tanks as for goldfish, as goldfish grow much too large. You replied by saying that the tank is intended for fancy goldfish that only grow to 9cm, which takes many years. This is a lie. At one pet shop I went to, which does a huge range of fancy goldfish, the smallest goldfish had its adult length stated as 18cm. As this is a large chain store, I do not think it would be in their best interest to lie. Today, I went to a specialist aquatics shop. They stocked fancy goldfish over 15cm long. As a member of a worldwide fish forum, I have had many people who have kept goldfish for most of their life verifying that the information in the email you sent me was false. I hope to hear from you.

Stunt-acia, a mysterious world inhabited with tiny misshapen men--men not shaped by any nature known to our world, for they are the Stunted!!!
:cue cheesy sci-fi music:

----EDIT----

actually, i just looked at the tank and while i would never use it for a goldie, that's a really cute decor. if it didn't look so hard to clean, i'd be sore tempted to get it for a betta or a newt.

 ok so whats the smallest tank to keep a male betta in then?! i bought my boy this undersea encounters tank, only for his triops, which holds a whopping 2 litres!!! (i'm not planning on keeping a betta in dont worry!!) it was advertised online and had 2-3 goldies in it! triops are probably a bit cramped in the damn thing! i've also seen "cutsy" tanks which wouldn't hold a kids shoe in, for sale, WHY OH WHY do they bother to make them? they could make more money by selling larger tanks. so this is one of those drive on the left things if you ask me, there's absolutly no point "no one else in civilisation do it but we will!" i'm in a mood now

  :(  :oh: :S :/  :look:   :-( :| :< :byebye: ????

that's awful. poor things.

and don't you get so frustrated when you're in a pet shop and you happen to spy those fist-sized betta bowls? yea, I bet I'd love existing in a space hardly big enough for me to turn around in (and not much else) and which quickly fills with ammonia and my own feces. yay. :/ poor fishies.

doesn't a male betta require at least 2.5 gallons (US) for space?

whats that, bout 10 litres or so? i'm lucky, my lfs dont sell the mini tea cups for bettas and i've not seen one around here that does yet!

most people strongly recommend not keeping bettas in anything smaller than a gallon. even a gallon is discouraged in that its a pain to keep the water in good condition.

they actually can make more money selling those tiny fad tanks. as you can see from the example given, they've got about $5 in the glass box and $3 in the plastic. the tank costs $24, a 300% profit. since they're cute and small, more people will be tempted to say hmm... i could probably make room for that... i would be confident betting that every commercial tiny tank you see on the market sells at a minimum 200% of the manufacturing cost.

actually, an interesting point regarding "drive on the left"... the only reason Americans drive on the right is that the British used the left side of the road, and when these things were getting settled upon, the Americans just had to be special...

--EDIT--
the office thing is still a really cute idea... just too small. only a newt could be happy in that tiny a container.

for a betta "bowl", i'd take one of those little 5g boxes you see, give it a sand bottom, and put in some FischerPrice office furniture. (my theory is that anything all-plactic and baby-safe is fish-safe.) it'd be like a corona commercial!

yeah but i've seen these little "not fit a baby shoe in" "tanks(pah)" for £2 here in the uk where as the larger glass ones (guessing at about 30 litre) for a tenner or more

and how come we british are near as dammit the only fools to drive on the left then?!?! is it something to do with americans being cooler than us so other countries copied them?!

then they only cost a pound to make! :p its all about the quantity they can sell... more idiots are willing to buy a cheapie betta than they are to put time and effort into any sort of real aquarium. so while companies can make a $5 profit on a single 10g, they can make a $10 profit on ten 1g. guess which one they'll put more effort into?

actually, the side of the road a country drives on says a lot about its social heritage... nations that had strong French affiliations drive on the right, nations with strong British affiliations drive on the left! thus most former British colonies and Japan drive on the left, while Canada (who was formerly French) and the US (who had a chip on its shoulder) drive on the right.

man, i miss general chat right about now.

--EDIT--
OoohFishy! you know lots of random things! go! now! explain!

AFAIK, the British driving on the left originates from the days everyone rode horses. The british would ride on the left side of the rode so they could draw their sword and use it to attack/ defend people going the other way. The yanks thought riding on the right was a more peaceful gesture.

That might be right, might be wrong.

Pica, what do you mean? Are you calling me random? :p

that tank is stupidly small... what the hell do these guys think they are doing! Its disturbing really that they bother producing tanks so small at the cost of these poor fishes lives.
