most people strongly recommend not keeping bettas in anything smaller than a gallon. even a gallon is discouraged in that its a pain to keep the water in good condition.
they actually can make more money selling those tiny fad tanks. as you can see from the example given, they've got about $5 in the glass box and $3 in the plastic. the tank costs $24, a 300% profit. since they're cute and small, more people will be tempted to say hmm... i could probably make room for that... i would be confident betting that every commercial tiny tank you see on the market sells at a minimum 200% of the manufacturing cost.
actually, an interesting point regarding "drive on the left"... the only reason Americans drive on the right is that the British used the left side of the road, and when these things were getting settled upon, the Americans just had to be special...
--EDIT--
the office thing is still a really cute idea... just too small. only a newt could be happy in that tiny a container.
for a betta "bowl", i'd take one of those little 5g boxes you see, give it a sand bottom, and put in some FischerPrice office furniture. (my theory is that anything all-plactic and baby-safe is fish-safe.) it'd be like a corona commercial!
