So right now I am on vacation and I am having family watch my freshwater. All the fish died, some how the temp went up to 98 and everything boiled. Well I am going to be at the gulf of Mexico this weekend and I was thinking of taking like 25 gallons of water from the gulf back home with me, would I need to do anything to it such as filter it before adding fish to it, or, can I just add live rock and sand right away?

YOu can add sand and rock right away. YOu could use a carbon bag and phosphate bag to clean it up a little bit. Just run the water through them both.

Just bear in mind that costal areas can often be less than spotless.

If you're going to collect salt water, you either need to be very sure that there are no pollutants on that coast, or collect off shore.

Well I would go off shore but I don't think that I will have access to a boat since we are only going to be in Venice, FL for one, they are pretty clean down there, they are freaks about keeping it clean since the Venice beaches are a big sea turtle area, I am pretty confident in the quality of the water. I will run it through carbon and possibly bio balls since I already have them installed in my canister. Let me know what you think.

I live in Florida and I've got to tell you that the west coast is so much more damn clean than the east coast. I don't think running it through bioballs will do crap. Carbon and a phosphate remover will do you the best good. And if you can get out on a jetty the closer to the open ocean you are the cleaner the water it will be. Dont collect it right off of the beach.

yeah, I can try for the jetty, that does sound like it might be more clean.
