The main difference is cost and upkeep input,

You will need a lot more equipment such as protein skimmers and RO Systems ( alternatively you could buy RO (REVERSE OSMOSIS) water from your local aquatic shop), special lighting, strict water parameters, Marine salt ( quantity depends on the tank size)

Cost wise for a start a good protein skimmer is near £300 again can be cheaper but it depends on the tank size, live sand must be used as a substrate (specially suited sand with infused bacteria for marine reef aquariums) Live rock will be needed which can get expensive if you have a large area to fill. Corals are expensive and generally thr bigger coral you buy the more expensive that coral is going to be. General inhabitants are more expensive then your average tropical variety. Marine reef aquariums are more comparable in price to specialist freshwater and Rare and exotic Tropical Setups with Heavy Live Plants Presence. In no way do I wish to discourage you from your desired venture but I deeply recommend that you look into the topic thoroughly as marine tanks require high maintenance levels in most cases. Speak to someone at your local aquatic store and ask them to explain your queries with the visual poreferences. They can then show you all the equipment you would require aswell as a general price guide for your tank size. Hope this is of some help to you, if you do proceed with this venture then I would love to hear how it works out for you, I keep community reef tanks myself so I am open to questions. :)

Hi, welcome! What size are you thinking about?

There is a greater cost, but the rewards are potentially wonderful if you take your time to plan the system.

Keep it in mind, because when you get it right , the results are amazing and your efforts can be more rewarding.

Need any help with it in the future then I as most people on the forum would be happy to help./
