Hi Guys

Im considering setting up a saltwater aquarium and have read a few bits and bobs but just had a few questions before doing the bulk of the research about this side of the hobby. (I currently keep tropical fish)

Tank wise im thinking of a fluval osaka 155 which is 155L W-61cm, 46cm D, 61cm H, which comes with a fluval 205 external canister filter. Skimmer wise i was looking at Tropical marine centre V2 skim compact 200. From the limited things i have read i believe you need to use RO water so an RO filter would also be required. How much live rock would you need for a tank this big and any recommendations on substrate? Im trying to get an idea of the things ill need so i can work a price together and see if funds will allow for it or if ill just go with another tropical.

Fish wise i was hoping to have a clownfish and then work from that with whatever fish are compatible as that would be the centre piece fish so to speak. At this moment in time the biggest question iv been asked (my the gf) what happens if we want to go on holiday for more than a week, say 2 weeks. Good question!

What happens if you go on holiday for that period of time? i have people to feed the fish but certainly when it comes to water changes i sadly dont have the luxury when it comes to something as complex as marine. What do you guys do when you go on holiday?? Is there any way around this leaving the tank for 2 weeks without water changes? At the moment in my tropical i carry out 2 weekly water changes which is abit excessive but i reckon i could at a push get away with leaving that.

I have many more questions but ill go away do abit of research before asking these were the main ones to give me food for thought!

Summary

How many litres would 25kg of salt treat? (Tank being 150litres)
How many water changes a week (Going off a tank stocked to perfectly stocked)
Holidays what do you do?
Possible ideas for substrate?
How much live rock?
Possible tank setup for a clown fish (one or 2?)

Many thanks guys no rush on the replies if your busy or tired etc!

I'm so sorry, we seem to have missed this

One water change a week of approx 20%
Holidays - just put a mark on the water line, so that your mate can top up with ro water, There is no problem about not doing a water change for two weeks imo.
Substrate, I like caribsea bahamas, it has shells in it
Live rock - approx 18 Kilos
Clowns, its got to be two, they are fasinating to watch

ps how about starting a journel?

25kg of salt on a 150L tank would last ages [months] and thats doing 10 - 20% weekly water changes.

It's roughly 1 1/2 to 2 mugs of salt to get salinity round about to 1.025 in a 25L container. Thats what mine usually is.

Hope this helps!

I agree with seffie! Start a journel mate. It helps for a number of reasons!

I have that tank, worth every penny!! All I can say is that I am so glad I did it, you should def do it!!

Here's mine now
