I have a 7 inch male Jack Dempsey and a 4 inch female in a 55 gallon aquarium. What are some possible tank mates that won't kill my bank account?

A plec or 2?

Serious you have a JD pair in a 55g so I wouldn't be looking to add much else really....

i am getting a 200 gallon in one months. i will put them in it.

i will look in to that. :good: are silver dollars a good choice or not really.

Get too big really, would work in a 200G but with two large JDs I would start with larger SDs once the 200 is up and running, small SDs can be quite fragile

Tiger Barbs work quite well with things like JD's and GT's but not sure about how they would work with a pair.

I keep Galaxy Rasbora with my breeding pair no drama. Then again mine are very timid. I just added the Rotkeil Sev that i wanted to keep out of my 3 and placed him/her into my JD tank and they swim as a shoal currently

Depends on the temperament of the fish in question to be fair. Mine are in a 63G and currently have a few tank-mates, which can be seen in detail on my profile.

really i thought tiger barbs would be eaten.

You are right. Tiger barbs would get eaten, at night. Speaking from own experience.

Tiger Barbs sleep at night, so they are easy prey for most fishes with big mouth.

I would recommend barbs as well. I think they are great fish to dither about large cichlids. But you do have to be careful of them being eaten. maybe some fully grown Odessa, Rosy or (my favourite) Gold barbs? andif you do get some, make sure you get at least 7 so they shoal amoungst themselves and don't take out any anger on the cichlids (although they would lose!)

next time i am at the lfs i will look into all of these choices and find out which one would work out the best for me.
