My mum is pondering having a tank, she likes the little one I have up for sale at the moment, 24"w x 14" deep x 20" high, roughly 100 odd litres (not much room in her flat). She would like interactive fish, something that will follow her finger up and down the tank and "wag". She likes acara shaped fish, but I think the blue acara I have are too big for this size tank. She has thankfully gone off the idea of an oscar after seeing the lodgers (expecially as I explained they will get bigger still  ). She is not keen on angels, but likes severum's but again not suitable for this tank. I am completely stuck on what to suggest, oh and it has to be colourful but not too small  :X

My keyhole would came up to show off and beg for food. Rams are cute, fun and very active. Then add some tetras maybe some corys because who does not like to watch them and that would be a great tank.

Dwarf acaras can be nice and have some color.

Smaller fish aren't as interactive as larger cichlids in general. The obvious candidates would be dwarf cichlids such as german rams, apisto's for colour, but then they aren't very interactive (in my opinion).

Ive just got some krobia and they are pretty cool they get lots of orange on them and I know that Coxwell aquatics have them in from their order list or you could get Laetacaras again I know coxwell stock sp.Buckelkopf which is the best one IMO.

But if I ever do a dwarf tank number one on my list is Apistogramma Panduro :)

I think a couple of Bolivian Rams would be good. They are lovely fish, and very colourful.

I know they are not cichlids, but some of the larger gouramis have a big of presence about them whilst having some personality, and you can't deny they don't follow your fingers with their whatever you call them feelers.

In terms of cichlids apistogramma's and dwarf are about it. I can't even think of any mid-size cichlids that would be suitable for that tank currently. I'll get back to you when i've had a browse :) Doesnt help i've lost my "fish bible", an encyclopedia of hundreds of fish.

im going to add another vote for bolivian rams. small . get quite colourfull and lots of personality for a small fish .

I`d say either Apistos or German Blue Rams.

My Apisto male is a right confident character and comes to the front of the tank as soon as he sees me near it. Both he and the females are inquisitive, especially if I put a floating plant in the tank.

The Rams are inquisitive too and will follow me along the tank.

Apisto`s would probably be more striking colour wise but you should have either have a proved pair or 1 male. Although people recommend 1 male to 2 or 3 females, once the male has paired both he and his chosen female can be known to bully other females in the tank.

my green spot puffer in my brackish tank is very personable and follows your finger around and every woman loves the cute face of a puffer!!!

Thanks for suggestions, she's not keen on "community fish" gourami etc, she is not keen on rams as had them before  ( fussy devil  ), she wants what she cant have a bigger tank!

Simonas I like the idea of puffers, I could suggest that. :good: She may change her mind again yet. (loves my mum really!!)

I nearly suggested a Betta, but i thought against it. You see Lesley you have one problem, or maybe its a helpfull thing i don't know. Whatever we suggest for your mum to keep, isnt she going to raise an eyebrow so to speak and be bored by it...due to the simple fact that YOU pretty much have it already

Thats the trouble she wants fish like I have, but this tank is not big enough really. Brainstorm she could always grow on some youngsters for me
