hi guys,

I am thinking of lightly planting my 20 gal tank as it looks kinda boring at the moment and a good dose of colour would be nice!

I was wondering what plants are good for a beginner to try out and any advice relevant to putting plants in. they would have to be pretty common too, my lfs doesnt have a wide range of plants for sale.

The tank has gravel subtrate, with two 18 watt fleuros for lighting. it gets a decent amount of natural light aswell during the day, depending on the weather of course. Thats all te information i can think of that would help.

The first plants I started with were swords. They are hardy and look great. There are many different types and Rose has posted some great info on them in the plants section.

I have vallis, anubia and java fern. All tough plants recommended to beginners, and all growing nicely in my small tank. You may need larger plants though.

two 18 watt bulbs...*drool* hopefully you shouldn't suffer from low light like lots of people do then. ;)

i recommend hygrophila, vallisneria and amoazon sword (echinodorus??) for background plants and cryptocorynes and anumbias for forground, there are almsot certianly other plants that you could grow but I dont know which. ;) if you havea look at the profiles on tropica.com you will find info on which plants are easy to care for and how much light they need. stay away from red plants though, they tend to need lots of light.
