How do you determine the thickness needed of the plexiglass when building a tank? Would 1/8" be sufficient for a 12" cube?

Thanks,

Laura

You know I dont know the exact equation but if you cant figure it out I would say go a little thicker because 1/8" might not be able to withstand the pressure of the water. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Yeah, if I don't find an equation I think I'll do 1/4" maybe. 1/8" would just be much easier to cut I think...

I know what you're saying about 1/8" being a lot easier to cut. Anyway I did so some research for you and I happened to find the answer you're looking for on another forum. They say any aquarium 1" to 13" should have 1/4" acrylic, (plexiglass) heres the link to the page, the table about acrylic thickness needed is about half way down, you'll see it. This article also does a very good job at explaining how to build a tank.

hope this helps, and good luck! post some pics of the process to help others in the future.

Thanks! I've been to that site before, but hadn't run into that article. It could be a bit before I gather the supplies and such to get going, but once I do I'll be sure to post the process.

Actually to be honest after reading that for and talking to you about building one, it has me thinking about finally building a design I've wanted to do for a while. 4 foot long mantel piece tank, about 6 to 8 inches wide and 6 to 8 inches tall that you could hang on the wall. I thought that would be so cool and us probably a sponge filter or something really small and run the return down to the opposite end so its like a small section taken of a stream. I'd probably stock it with just some small tetras or something that would go in a small tank like that, or maybe white clouds? Not sure but the more I think about it the more I want to do it!!

That sounds really neat! A stream with white clouds would be so cool. You should go for it so I can see the pictures :good:
