Dropped in PetsMart to get some frozen brine shrimp and , as always , I shuffled past the fish to take a look . These plump young Mickey Mouse Platy’s looked too good to pass up at $ 3.99 apiece so I bought two females and one male .

Believe it or not these Platy’s are the first live bearers I’ve had in over twenty years . So far so good they’re eating well and have survived their first day . It’s always a gamble with PetsMart but I can’t pass up fish that call to me and these did for some reason . It’s too soon to be thinking of this but like @emeraldking said recently . Get fry quick and reared in your water before you lose them . Or something like that .

I was in a pretty bad store about 50km from here, killing time while my wife had an appointment. Even though I have no linebred, fancy fish, and no plans to go in that direction, I was sorely tempted by some marigold swordtails they had. They looked like the ones I bred in my teens, and back then, I loved the subtle colours in that fish. There's a pearly green that comes through the apricot colour - really nice.

I walked away, but I don't know how many times I'll manage that. I won't get wild type swordtails around here...

Those of us who started young, whether we continued or have restarted, probably all have favourite fish. Osteogaster aenea (ex Corydoras aeneus), X. variatus platys, sphenops or butleri mollies, and wild type guppies always make me stop and think.

Yep , there’s always those old favorites that you can never get out of your mind .

I remember our variatus from our first tank! He was so handsome, our 1st livebearer. Thankfully (now) he had no fish to mate with, lol. I see pretty platies sometimes now, but not enough to buy them...yet
