I have one of those thin, strip 'digital' thermos that stick to the outside glass... Is this reliable enough or should I buy a better one... any recommendations?

Good enough ! Ive had several of these, and always checked them with electronic thermometers, and they seem quite accurate... that aside, accuracy isnt the game, its stability - if the temp is stable you are ok.
