I'm going to go down to the LFS tomorrow and start browsing and hopefully picking up some equipment for a new betta setup to house 2-3 males, depending on what size tanks they have and for what price. It got me thinking about dividers - has anybody had different themes for each individual betta separated by the divider?

By 'theme', I am of course talking about substrate and decoration. If a single tank was divided into three or so partitions and you're going to have glaring separations, why not roll with it and make them unique?

For example, you could have the substrate going from sand to fine gravel to medium gravel. Or use the same type of substrate but have different colours, perhaps even a traffic light Red/Amber/Green theme? Of course, it would make sense to match the betta's colour to the theme of its partition. Or, you could create a 'Round the World' tank and use different ornaments to suit different locales (Egyptian statues, castles, etc.).

If you had two bettas, you could do a theme that fits duality such as 'Light and Dark' or 'Good and Evil' or even have a fake mirror effect where the ornaments are placed in symmetry. Perhaps a Yin/Yang theme where you have a light betta on dark decoration and vice versa?

Has anyone ever implemented separate partition styles for the same tank? I'd love to see some pics. Anyone else think this is a good idea, or have any ideas for themes?

Great idea!! Only problem with different substrates is that if you're not careful you might get them all mixed up together.

Yeah that's what I thought originally, but it could be solved by putting in the dividers first, and having the bottom of the divider solid until it is a few centimetres clear of the substrate. If the divider is a tight fight, even sand wouldn't get through.

Oh, and I've just thought of a cracking idea that I'm sure the Harry Potter fans on here would appreciate:

Four partitions for four Bettas, each representing a house from Hogwarts. You could print out the crests and stick them on the front, and have the decor match the colours of the houses.

mhm... that is a good idea.. with the harry potter thing. i jus got the 6th book today. and i do have 4 bettas. 1 pastel 1light puple with dark purple fins 1purple-ish with red fins an 1 blue-ish green-ish with a top on his head :D :p

very cool ideas!

my divided tank has a kind of winter theme going on.... pure white sand, which looks like snow, and a black background which looks like a winters night sky... it kind of happened by accident but i did think about adding silver stars to the black background and putting in some wee fir trees and santas!! :p

i remember coming across pics of a divided tank online which had four diff colour gravels: red, blue, yellow and green. it looked really nice.

Interesting idea! I have two bettas, a red male VT and a female cambodian CT.... they're not in a divided tank but since Jerry is dark red, he has light substrate and Pearl is pale pink, with black marbles for substrate.

The around the world thing sounds great! You could have, for example, a little castle in one tank for Europe, a Balinese-style hut for Asia... stuff like that. :)

Ooo, I love the House theme idea! (PS- DId you like the 6th book? Better than #5 IMO, less teenage angst.) I did have a community tank with all Potter names. Even a pair of mollies names Salazar and Rowena and a pair of swordtails named Godrick and Helga.

Green bettas are a bit rare, they tend to be more of a turquoise hue, so Slytherin might be difficult...hmmm...Now you have my mind running!

You could also do a 4 split with a seasonal theme, Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter.

Haha yeah i was thinking about doing the same thing! Im not much of a Harry Potter fan so i think gonna go for the playboy mansion  look, What do you think... Haha :D

I'm not actually much of a HP fan myself, having not read any of the books, but it just seemed like a good idea for a theme.

The seasonal idea is good, and we can see from Bandit's post how to achieve a winter setting with the white sand.

My divided tanks have different "themes." I have 2 10 gallons divided into 3 sections, and each section has glass marbles and plants that suit each betta. It's like interior decorating for bettas. I love it! :)

I'll post pictures later when I can get the wire for my camera, if anyone's interested in seeing them.

i would like to see your tank set up. all i have is 4 1gal bowls. brown gravel. an the same plant in them all. i kept feeling sry for the bettas that had the crappy plants so i went an got all the same plants :p so reason for jelousy among fishys now :D

You could may do an Around the World theme, with tiny Grek ruins in one section. A little castle in the next, and maybe a tiki head in another. I have seen little New York and LA skylines, but they would be too big for what we are discussing.

I wonder where you could get an aquarium safe Eiffel Tower?

Sometimes plants and rocks get old. It is fun to imagine different ways to decorate, even if the ideas never get tried.

I found an older pic of one of my divided tanks. You can't see the wall through the back of the tank anymore. I put different colored papers behind each section.

One thing I forgot to mention before... When I clean the tank, I take the dividers out and it's hard to keep the different colored rocks from mixing together. I end up having to pick them all out by hand and it gets kind of frustrating.

Here's the pic.
