hi, again. okay, somethings that I forgot to ask. I my bettas aren't in tanks with filters, those are really a lot of work and the tank could bust and leak all over my carpet, so could my two bettas survive in there without a filtered tank?

actually now that I think about it, I don't know much about fishes and tanks and stuff are there any filters out there that aren't...lol...um, electrical? :*) I feel like such a dork, but really, is there anyother way to filter thier water?

also, anybody have any idea how much a relatively small tank would cost? not one of those cheap small bowls, like I have for my second betta but you know, your average tank?

oh, yeah, today, I changed Gomez's water and this is the first time that I've done it, I just got him on...wednesday I think and he started freaking out, his...uh...the fins or the...minifins....that he has by his head/neck whatever you wanna call it, they started puffing out really bad...did I almost kill him or something, he looks like a little baby, compared to Don Juan (my other betta) he's really small, is he just growing or what?

thanks! :alien:

Unfiltered tanks are fine for betta's.

If you are in the USA you can get a 10 gallon tank glass for about $8-$10. This is just the tank without a stand.

Don't feel like a dork... The only dumb question is the one you were afraid to ask.

It's good you asked about the water. Do you add a chlorine/chloramine remover? You must remove the toxins from your tap water when you do water changes. The second problem might be your PH. Did the new water match the PH of the old water? You should invest in an inexpensive PH tester, there are several brands on the market. The third question is about water temperature. Was the new water the same temp as the old water? If you are getting them bigger tanks, they will really be happy! Lucky boys!

I currently have two bettas. One is in my community tank of 5.5gal and other is in a one gal tank by himself. Both are happy. Plenty of swimming room. I find Betta to be easy to care for because they don't require so much and when it is feeding time, you only need to give a few pellets or bits of bloodworms and they eat them right there and then which means no rotten food at the bottom. That is the main reason why filter is not needed.

I got my one gal tank for 20 bucks at Petco which includes the gravel, plant, light, the air pump and lid. Great looking tank. Small and perfect for desk or if you want it at work or any small space. Plenty of swimming room too. He loves it in there. I use my air pumps but I unplug it every day when I go to bed because it can be noisy for me(I'm a light sleeper) and I think it is relaxing for him when it is off.

As for my other one, he's in a 5.5 gal tank and it has filter because of my other fish. I have two albino cory in there to help eat food at the bottom of tank(my little cleaning crew) and two black skirt tetra and one guppy. All fine in there.

I don't use tap water since the tank is small and I can afford to buy purified water at the grocery store. I do 25% water change twice a week. but if you do tap water, do what they said above. Use water conditioner.

Any more questions you may have, just ask away, there are no stupid questions. We all need to get the information some how and what better place to get it than here? :D

you can get a little one gallon with an air filter and a lid with lights on it for 10 bucks at wal-mart, that's what a lot of my betta live in (alone of course) and it will be soooo much better for your bettas and MUCH easier to take care of and keep clean for you...most of my betta don't even like the air bubbles so I hardly ever turn them on, so if you want to avoid hassles with electronics....don't even mess with the stuff that comes with the tank, just rinse it out add gravel, plants and put the lid on, then do partial changes a couple times a week....you can use a turkey baster (around 1.00) to clean out the gravel and excess debris

my other bettas live in 2 gallon tanks and though they're roomier, I've noticed a 1 gallon is really just the perfect size

and Gomez was probably just flaring, he might of been a little nervous or p.o.'ed about being moved around
