The juvies FINALLY got that 20 gallon long they've been waiting for, and while I was tranfering them I took the opportunity to mark down what varieties I got :D

Looks like there may have been some cannibalism going on this time. I started out with ~100 fry after the cull, lost about 8 in the first 2 weeks, and later lost two to choking... and yet I only have 57 left. The math doesn't add up . That does explain why I haven't seen the Downs fry in a few weeks though...

Anyway, here are the results:
42 ST
15 DT

19 Light Bodied -- 14 ST, 5 DT. These are cambodian, basically. Most have red marbled fins, some carry the copper gene but it's expressed as kinda gold-ish due to their white bodies, some are solid white... there's no telling what some of them will end up looking like, so I didn't bother to break this group down any further.

38 Dark Bodied -- 28 ST, 10 DT. These are the ones that will probably turn redloss marble in a couple of weeks
  • 5 Red -- 4 ST, 1 DT. These are red with non-copper iridescent highlights
  • 15 Iridescent -- 12 ST, 3 DT. Non-copper iridescent. Some are full mask. They are red multi, but once the marble gene kicks in this will probably change.
  • 14 Copper -- 9 ST, 5 DT. 6 STs and 4 DTs are copper-red; red with copper highlights. The others are full mask with red undertones like the iridescent juvies.
  • 4 Misc -- 3 ST, 1 DT. Couldn't decide what these were . Most are just kinda grey, probably because the redloss gene is kicking in.

That's so awesome Synirr! My babies spawned yesterday morning, although I did see the girlie eating some eggs, I hope there is still something in the nest. I'll see when I get back to the city tomorrow!
Those sound like awesome colours and fry, I can't wait to see piccies, or better get some myself :p

Sounds like a colorful bunch! Aw, the poor Downs fry..... :-( (A tear) We'll miss him. Anyways, sounds like a great group of babies. How are the majority of the DTs looking? Crooked spines? I still love that one with the most crooked spine :) And how do you tell the copper iridescence from regular iridescence?

Sorry about the missing fry... but all in all looks like a pretty productive spawn.

Synirr, are these results in line with the percentages that you expected when you selected the parents? This reminds me of when I did the fruit fly experiment in my Genetics lab.

Yeah, I didn't get any great DTs. Most have at least a slight kink at the base of their tails like their grandmother Mini does, and their lobes aren't all that even either (bot not horrifically uneven, I might add.) C'est la vie :). I'm thinking of starting a different DT plakat line in the future, possibly mustard gas. Can't stick with nothing but coppers forever! The STs are the real show stealers this time.
If you shine a flashlight on them it's easy to tell who's copper and who's not. The coppers show up as.... well... copper, and the others are green/blue.

Yep, pretty much what I expected, though the dark-bodied fry haven't started to marble yet; this should begin in another couple of weeks. I was expecting 25% DTs, 25% coppers, which is roughly what I got if you consider that some of the light-bodied fry do carry the copper gene as well, and more multis than anything (the reds and iridescent fry)

hey synirr can i have a copper when there old enough (i dont care if its male or female)

Have? No. Buy? Yes :p

So... question.

This was an F2 spawn right? If someone were to take one of your F2 babies and breed them to a fish from the first spawn... that would be a betta nono correct? Or is that okay to do? Seems a little too much mixing of the same genes to me.

How much are you going to be selling for? You said full mask. That made me go " :hey: "

I was wondering about this too... I know that in complex animals, humans, etc... you end up with babies that often will be homozygous for recessive genes that cause diseases. Not sure if that happens in bettas though

Yes, this is F2. Since the parents of the F1 were completely unrelated I think it would be alright to inbreed for one more generation, but I wouldn't want to chance any more than that. If I keep this line going ideally I'll be outcrossing next time, if I can find the right betta for the job :)

Price depends on the quality of the fish. I'm wanting to put most of these on Aquabid with starting prices of between $5 and $10, but some of the pet-quality fish (like the DTs with crooked spines) will be free for adoption later on.

Hmm, that really crooked DT up for adoption later? :shifty: I need more shelves, one's that can hold 2.5 gallons of water weight.... :shifty:
