Sorry but I need to vent about this.

I am about done using the Quotation mark system for quoting things. It works horribly if you want to add a line break or to add additions text to a quote. I have wasted to much time trying to make it work decently. I have spent a half hour on multiple occasions trying to put in a quote and had it misfire every time. The result was I deleted the entire post and never made it.

So, from now on I will never quote using the quotation symbol to put the quoted test into that stupid box. I will onty quote the old fashinoned way by adding the " at the start and the end. I am too old to have to fight with poorly designed software.

This is the fault of the people who designed the software this site uses. It is not the fault of the site admins except that they chose the software and to keep using it.

I noticed that when I joined, been “” since

I hate the quote tool as well, I use it only when caffeinated enough to function...and even then it takes me ages to deal with

I find it easy. Rather than use multiquote, I quote one thing at a time. If I need to add to the quote, I just type it in the quote box. If I want to say something relevant to the quote I type it beneath the quote box.

Says who???

I agree. If I want to quote several things, I quote the first and type a response, then quote a second and type a response to that under the quote box, and so on.

I have to agree But I find it easy

We all need to vent sometimes!

Like this? Simple put your curser at the beginning of the point you want to break, hit enter, and it breaks the quote into two, and you can add your own thoughts.

While I don't think there's much wrong with the quote or multiquote feature, I also don't think there's anything wrong with using quotation marks either! I would recommend using the @ symbol to tag whoever you are quoting though, so they are aware. The quote function lets them know you're responding to them, but without using that, the tagging system would be best I think.

I love the multiquote feature! I'm using it now. Then I just insert breaks into the quotes if I want to respond to different parts of someone's post. With the way I blather on, I need multiquote to keep it tidy... at times if I only quoted one person at a time, I'd be hogging a thread and being even more annoying than usual.

It's is even easy to add things to a quote. Like how Adorabelle is brilliant and smart and super pretty! See? Even Essjay says so.

So try this. Make a quote which involves two sentences from the same source but fr two different paragraphs. What you want is the second sentence in the first paragraph which you thenn end with ....... because you are not using the full text. And then make a line break after the ........
And then add the last sentence from the second paragraph.

Or just try this Make a quote. once it is there place your cursor at the end of it and hit enter so you can add more to the quote. I bet what you get as a second quote box.

Like this from my original post

"I have spent a half hour on multiple occasions trying to put in a quote and had it misfire every time............

I am too old to have to fight with poorly designed software."

This is actualy the correct way to joining two things from a longer piece of text into a single quote. I did this for years writing papers in college. The ..... indicates there was more to the original than is being used in th quote one is offering.

Okay, I think I see what you mean. It's going to insert a break in the quote if you hit enter. But you can edit down the sentences so you're only addressing the sentences you want, so it will look like several quote boxes like the two above, then write your response underneath?

I think rather than poor design, it's done on purpose because writing responses inside the quote box for someone else can be confusing and misleading, where people are unsure who actually said what, perhaps?

I’ve just learned that I can split a quote just by tapping ‘return’. Thanks AdoraBelle. :)
@AdoraBelle Dearheart

That makes quoting a lot easier. Now my only pain is having to cut chunks of text away every time to keep just the relevant bit I want to quote.

The multiquote function, is that just tapping the quote button at the bottoms of multiple posts…..?

No problem! :D

Just highlight and hit delete for the text you don't want. :)

Yes. Useful for quoting several different people, or several different posts by the same poster. I'm afraid you can't store the same post in the quote function to use multiple times... if you want to quote the same post more than once (to use different parts of their text) what I do is keep their post open in another tab, use the quote I already have stored in the quote/multiquote function and begin the post, then go to the separate page where I have their post open and hit quote again. Repeat as many times as needed.

But I've used this type of xenofora software in a few places for a long time, this is an old forum design that lasted for this long because it's pretty good at what we need - and I haven't needed to do that often. Usually splitting the quote into separate quote boxes by hitting enter is all I've needed.

Oh yeah, you can quote just a short section from a huge post just by highlighting the text you want, and the option to quote or reply will appear. Hit that, and it'll add it to multiquote.

I find it extremely easy...
Just hit the "enter"/"return" key to break texts up and you can make any edits to the text by just highlighting it...
It works extremely well and I don't see any reason for change.
Also if you just want to reply to a certain PART of a text, just highlight the portion of text in a message and two options will pop up along with the browser options except these options will be blue. It will say " Quote" and "Reply"
Reply is something I mostly use but if you are quoting multiple texts from different threads, use the " Quote" function
