Hey Lovelies!

I fed my fish a piece of egg yolk. They all love it.

But something odd happened to my hoplo.
Some yellow round thingy seemed to be stuck on the right side of his face, between his 2 nostrils. It then came off a while after I noticed it, but it left a round hole. Now it looks as if he has 3 nostrils there. -.- (he has 2 nostrils on each side normally).

That doesn't sound good, hole in the head disease maybe? Keep a close eye on him.

They make a 30 inch setup for your 29 gallon too but you'd be better off getting the Coralife version that I have on my 36 gallon because the Coralife light actually has 30 inch bulbs, where the CurrentUSA has 24 inch bulbs centered in a 30 unit. Both are close to the same in price with the Coralife being maybe $15-20 more.

HITH doesn't look the same though, and it certainly doesn't start with a yellow thing apparently munching on the fish.
If I didn't know better, I would have thought it was... an apple snail baby? But that's impossible! There were no eggs on the tank walls.
Could have been one of the sand grains he often gets stuck in his nostrils, but this one could have gotten stuck under the skin and get popped out by his digging? Still doesn't explain the perfectly round hole...

Both brands make a 2 bulb version & believe me, that's the one you want. It's less expensive to replace 2 bulbs and generally speaking the 4 bulb units are for saltwater setups anyway.

The only bad part about the Coralife fixture is that it's only available with 1 daylight bulb & 1 actinic bulb. I had to purchase a freshwater bulb, called a colormax, separately. I don't think the fish or the plants know the difference but the actinic bulb made my tank look too bright & yellowy colored. The colormax bulb gives the tank a more realistic coloration with a warm glow.

Hey Lovelies, how you all doin? Got 2 Malayan trumpet snails today. Got 'em free cos the lfs has an abundance of 'em. I've a feeling I'll regret it but we'll see...
Took the 'ol 10 gal hex out of the shed today. Posted about stocking suggestions before and think I'll get 3 sparkling gouramis. Handy little project to look forward to.

No-one is helping me on the correct forum, so maybe one can help me here - or at least make me smile!

My plants are not doing too well, it is a heavily planted tanks but some of the leaves are going brown at the ends. Any ideas?

The fish have figured out a way to use leaves to wipe after pooping.

Meanwhile, I'm probably dealing with a flesh-eating apple snail baby in my fish tank...

Ok cool. Is the colormax the same as the daylight? And it turns out that the bulbs are 28" not 30" still 4" more than standard 30" hoods though, and that makes a big difference.

So all in al, you'd recommend it highly? Any before and after pics, or you never took any?

What kind of light do you have & do you add CO2 or ferts to the tank? Which plants are shoing the worst signs?

Of course I have more pics.....and I over analyze everything I do or buy so I've done the research for my limited budget and size of tank, the Coralife Aqualight 30" was the best buy and bang for the buck. Yes, the bulbs are 28" but the bulbs in the CurrentUSA Nova are really only 22" even though they're called 24 inches. That's a lot of wasted space in a 30 inch unit IMO.

Here's an old pic of my 36 with the standard, cheapo T8 light fixture that gave off a lowly 17 watts for 36 gallons in a fairly deep tank. Hardly any plants would grow in this tank except wisteria, and that didn't do too well either.

Here's a picture of the new Coralife but with 1 daylight (white) & 1 actinic (blue) 31 watt bulbs for a total of 62 watts for a 36 gallon. Notice how yellow the plants look & the color of the fish was even washed out. The male Cherry Barb looked more dull burgundy than they red they really are.

So I changed the 31 watt actinic (blue) bulb out for a 31 watt colormax (pink) and the results are dramatic, even more than the pictures show.

What kind of gouramis are those big ones? Pearl? Opaline?
