I've just read that we should replace our thermostatic heaters once a year because thermostats are known to stick etc, but it sort of shocked me a bit - do you think its overcautious or advisable? I'm talking about good brands, not cheap chinese ones :p

I know a guy who replaces his every two years, and sells the used ones. All but two of my tanks are in one room, and I use undersize heaters. The room sits at about 78-80F, so if the heaters stick theyreally won't go too far above that. If they fail, they won't go lower than room temperature.

I have two tanks outside the fishroom, I make a habit of putting my hand on the side of the tank at least once daily, quick temperature check.

Or a thermometer would work just as well :D

Well, the oscar considers thermometers another thing to be broken. I quit putting them in there after the third one. He also rips off filter intakes, and once in a while partially shoves the spray bar out of the tank.

The other tank has angels, who don't break the thermometer, just move it someplace where you can't read it.

Ive got a couple of 40 year old 'stats.... they go forever unless theres a fault, then sods law says it stick on ! Ive had days old ones bust, so I guess its more down to build quality than luck !
