Hey,

I've been posting the progress of this tank in 'coldwater + pond fish', although as this forum is in a category called 'other pets' for some bizarre reason, no-one seems to visit :/

This tank has been cycling for 2 weeks now, it is a present for my girlfriend's 23rd birthday. She has always wanted a fancy goldfish called George, so i thought this would be a perfect oppurtunity to turn one of our smaller tanks into a coldwater aquarium.

This is the bare 10 UK gallon tank...

I wanted plants that goldies wouldn't munch, as they are proned to eating anything they can. I was told Java moss and fern have a slightly bitter taste, and goldies don't usually go for them, plus they are water root plants, that grab on to anything you attach them to. perfect!

So my original plan was bogwood, sand, java ferns and moss all meddling into one sweet looking habitat. This soon changed!

After a visit to my LFS i discovered the ridiculous price of bogwood! Not that my girlfriend isn't worth it, but surely £26 for 6Kg of bogwood is absurd!?

So in the end I eventually opted for black rocks to attach my java's to...

Java moss...

And Java fern...

tied down with black cotton, which will hopefully rot in a month or so, leaving the java to grow up the rocks on it's own.

I was then told that sand can irritate fancy goldies gills, so I decided to go for a yellow gravel, to immitate the beautiful golden sand.

But then I was told that gravel too big and chunky might get stuck in the fancies mouth, so i decided to cover it in a layer of the standard tiny pebbly stuff.

[I can't kill this fish... everything has to be perfect!]

So once all this had been researched and bought, here we have the final picture, waiting for only one more thing... a fancy goldie called George.

Oh, and if anyone has any experienced suggestions as to where these moss balls could go...

please let me know!

Thanks, hope you like my first coldwater set up! Hope my lass does too!!

After researching books, websites, and asking on this forum, i found that the water should be between 18-22 degrees C. Plus the moss balls prefer this temp range too.

That looks like a really nice tank mate, and your moss balls look extremely healthy. Also, Ginge atleast that way with a heater he can keep the tank at a constant temperature to stop any shock. 10 Gallons is a bit small for a fancy though, and they also prefer to be in groups, I hate to pi** on your cornflakes but it's just what i've seen on here.

Thank you!

Well, we've got George...

But he is looking really lonely, doesn't seem to be as active as he was at the lfs with his brothers. So today were going to buy a baby moor..

..and yes, were setting up their 30 gallon tank in a few months, plus 10% water changes are made daily and the filter is superb, so hopefully he'll be a bit happier with a black moor.

..i was suprised with the moss balls too, they were going brown when I bought them from the lfs who had them out of water!?! But after a day of sitting in the tank they brightened up a bit :)

The java moss has already started to become 'bushy', and the fern is starting to grab hold of the rocks.

Can i just ask, why are you not supposed to use polyester covered cotton thread?

Cheers.

the polyester thred wont rot away and so will remain in your tank untill you cut it off...

cotton will rot after a month or so preventing your fish becoming tangled in it

cheers for the info.

..my cotton thread didn't say if it was covered or not, so was really just checking to make sure I wasn't poisoning my girlfriend's fish!

`m not sure if mine is cotton or not to tell the trth, the plan in to cut it off when i an see my moss/ fern is well atached

Really nice!!!

I think this could of made a nice small community tropical tank, but maybe you'll do that once the goldfish has its bigger house!

Liking the java ferns. Im sure your fish will be happpy with a friend.

I've got a 40 uk gallon tropical tank, this is for my girlfriend as she loves fancy goldies.

She loved it by the way, took us 4 hours to finally find the 'perfect' george!

Here's todays additions to the tank...

We've got Marley [he's a right pig]..

George getting to know Marley [George seems much happier now there's company]..

And a hillstream loach named 'squirrel', [as he looks like a flying squirrel when he swims]..

They all seem to be getting on really well, and even though Marley doesn't stop eating, he hasn't touched the javas! So all is good :D

I dont usually say this, but marley is cute! and what a great name!

Im glad George is happy now that he has a friend.

Good luck with the set up! its looking good!

Just a word of warning, black boor's can damage their eyes reaaally easily. Make sure there are no sharp bogwood bits for him to hit.
