I find that the only real problem with duckweed is when you want to remove it permanently. It's a very good floating plant when it comes to absorbing excess nutrients from the water column and providing shade.
A floating ring helps to stop it blocking too much light, and some fish love eating it direcly from the surface, particularly gold fish.
There are also plenty of videos on YouTube showing how to make it into a great fish food. I've had a lot of success feeding a duckweed and spirulina fish food to my shrimp and Otocinclus.
