I feel like I'm at my wits end. About 17 days ago, I purchased a pretty little turquoise girl betta from Walmart. Now please don't everyone pile on me at the same time, but I was too excited and didn't quarantine her and added her to my main tank. Two days later, little white spots started to apear on her head, an answer to why she has been so "jumpy" the whole time.

Well, that was over 2 weeks ago. The tank itself has turned to the hospital tank. No gravel. No plant. Just little terracotta pots and an ornamental aquarium "fish house". I've been treating since 10 days ago with Quick Cure and all seemed well....

UNTIL today. The water seemed a little bit cloudier than usual, like more air bubbles are saturating into the water. BUT Upon closer inspection, I see little tiny creatures on the tank glass VERY similar to the notorious ICH I was eyeing just a couple of weeks before (just smaller). At first I thought that maybe it was just air bubbles or something else inanimate in the water, but I see those little buggers moving against the current in an upward direction and then "let go" as if taking a dive. Now, could it be planairia (sp?), but they were bigger, longer, and slower. Or has the terrible ICH come back somehow managed to survive the 10 day treatement somewhere in the recesses of my tank!!!

Fish behavior? Sheba, the alpha girl betta, is more irritable than usual, chasing her subordinates around more than she has been. Sable, the lowest ranking girl, just hides and hides and sometimes doesn't even come up for food during feeding time.

This is crazy but even the male betta in a seperate 1 gallon has lost interest in food and is swimming back & forth like he is trying to get out of the tank.

Am I just going crazy here????!!! I'm asking myself what the heck did I forget to do that is allowing these monsters to survive???? I feel like just pulling my hair out!!!!

Notes:
-I do add 1 tsp per gallon of water
-I do dechlorinate the water
-I've been changing 15-25% of the water every other day
-I've taken out the carbon filter and replace with a non-carbon filter
-I rinse out the fitler with tank water when doing water changes and have not changed to a new filter yet since this whole thing started(should I have???)
-The water temp is at 82-84 degress Farenhite (before ICH was at 78-80)
-I've added 1 air bubble maker to compensate for the meds taking out oxygen in the tank water.
-Since there is no gravel, I use a turkey baster and remove fish poo almost every day.

What am I missing? Should I have bleached everything first before putting the fishes back..........UUGGGHHHH I'm just babbling..... :grr:

well, the little creatures you see are not ick. The free swimming form is too small to be seen by the naked eye.

I prefer the salt and heat method to cure ick. I do not trust nor believe medications work as well. You are doing the right thing by adding one teaspoon of salt per gallon of water. ALso i would raise the temp a tad bit more to no less than 86. Just keep up with your regular water change schedule. Keep treating for ick for 3 weeks after you see the last cyst. Many people cut the treatment off as soon as their are no cysts left, and then they get another outbreak.

Hmmmmm.....

That's good news....

The bettas aren't getting any new white spots. (sigh of relief)

There is this white dust on the bottom of the tank: dead planarias if they aren't ICH creatures.

I wonder where the planarias are coming from. I've totally rationed out the fish food and suck up with the turkey baster any left overs. Could it be in my tap water? and if it is, eeeewwwweee if I'm drinking it....

Back to girls:
---------------
I've turned the temp up to 84-86. I'm gonna continue hospitalizing the bettas for another week or more just to be sure. (probably without QuickCure....that long of a duration of meds couldn't be too good for them)

I totally freaked out last night. I can't believe how frustrating and stressful it was to treat this ICH monster!!!!??? No new "un-quarantined" fishies for me!!!!

is quickcure a very diluted medication, that you have to add 1 tsp per gallon of water? For most ich meds you add 1 tsp for every 10 gallons...

I once had an ich outbreak due to the same cause. Didn't put anything in the water though. Hear it winds up doing more harm than good in a main aquaria. Alls I did was bring the water temp up for 2 weeks and presto chango. no more ich. If memory serves I brought it up as high as about 82 F
