Ive been told that the tank i am having made has a filter underneath the gravel, i know nothing about filter systems etc please can someone advise me!! How often do i have to clean the tank out and does it do everything itself? Will my small fish be ok, they wont get caught in it or anything....

Hi Rachel

The tank you are describing is an undergravel filter. (UGF)

It goes underneath your gravel and has lift tubes that come up, preferably one in each corner, with powerheads on them to move the water thru the gravel, up the tubes and out into the aquarium again.

Depends on what fish you have and how messy they are. The UGF is self sufficient but you will have to do gravel cleanings to help it work better.

There are caps that go on the holes in the filter plates that aren't being used. As long as they're on, you won't have a problem of the lil guys swimming underneath it.
