Hey Peeps,

My male beta built his nest yesterday, only to be destroyed by white flys?!

Anyone have a clue what these buggers are?

Anyway I am doing a change in the tank tomorrow to get rid of them, so he can build his nest again and mate with the femal betta.

I just cannot wait, the male betta is so beutifull, when I do the change tomorrow I will take a piccie of him to show you.

Will let you know how it all goes!

That's a very nonchalant way to handle something like a parasite infection. :p

How exactly did they get in the tank? Were they there before the nest was built? Were the flies trying to destroy the nest? Better descriptions?

Ok, well my male is in perfect condition, however the nest that was destroyed was done by tiny white flys that live in the water, I havent noticed them in there before.

I have noticed that all of a sudden there is about 20 snails, I dont know how they got there.

The flys destroyed it by being at the top of the surface.

Hope im making sense.

I think there flys anyway, they are so tiny.

Flies never live in the water...

Probably another form of parasite.

Snails? Did you add new plants to the tank? There is a way to kill them in a pinned article in the invertebrates section.

Are they little white worms? like, planaria? Planaria is caused by too much fertilizer from excess food, too many fish/snails, etc. As far as I know fry love to eat Planaria.... just guessing what this could be ;)

Yeah, definitely, if you've added new plants and you did not quarentine them they probably brought the snails in. Make sure you know whats going on before you use the tank for spawning. Good luck with everything!!

I think they are called cyclops, the description I got for them was:

Tiny white darting things! :
Tiny darting things about the size of a fullstop. Usually appear to have two tails. These creatures are a tiny algae eating crustacian called a cyclops.

Couldnt find any invertebrates section, must be blind.

Any ideads on how to get rid of the buggers, and has anyone got an experience on these?

Thanks

Mells

Cyclops aren't dangerous... in fact, my betta fry have been eating the ones in their tank, lol. I wouldn't think they'd be capable of destroying a nest though... perhaps the male just let it disintegrate?
Large water changes will get rid of the majority of them, but I'm not sure of a way to get rid of them entirely... they're very common in fish tanks, it's just that their numbers are usually so low that they aren't noticed

Well peeps, I did the water change, and bought a ploystrene cup today, broke it in half and floated it on the surface, and my males starting to build his nest up, my female whos in the net waiting to be let into the tank has got her stripes, im so excited.

Just thought I would share this with you, will keep you all updated.

Mells

Yeah this is my first spawn with Bettas, I have just let the female into the tank tonight, so will keep you all updated.
