You might not remember, but a few months ago I was inquiring as to whether or not I could keep a betta in my lotus bog. Well, I tried it, and he not only survived, he flourished! I finally took Lazuli in for the winter a couple days ago, and after a summer of sunlight and a live-food diet, he looks fabulous! Well, his fins are a bit ragged after swimming through all the water weeds in there, and he's not exactly fancy--just a regular betta--but he is the most gorgeous shade of almost iridescent cerulean blue!! He is also extremely healthy. It must have taken me an hour to catch him in order to bring him inside. As it is, he does have a bit of an attitude...I'm currently keeping him in my 25 gallon "bachelor's tank" until he can be moved to his own five gallon, so for now he is in the company of 3 male corydoras catfish and a young pineapple swordtail waiting to be transferred into my 40 gallon tank. I was pretty apprehensive about that sword at first, scared Lazuli might get his fins nipped, but needn't have worried--any time that poor swordtail got near the betta, Lazuli scared him off with a lunging feint, just to let him know who's "boss." Now, I couldn't even feed that sword to get near him! Even just an hour after his relocation, Lazuli came right up to the glass to stare at me whenever I'd come near the tank. He always wears this expression like, "I'd like to see you try and catch me this time!" He also adapted immediately to flake and pellet food, too, so that thankfully wasn't a problem.

I'll try to post a few pictures of Lazuli (though I sincerely doubt they will do him justice). I've already taken them. I must say, he was pretty interested in the camera so it wasn't terribly hard to take pics of him until the novelty wore off. Then I just had to put the cam right to the glass, and he came zooming right back to check it out!!

I just love this guy--he has so much personality, not to mention a coloration to die for!

I vaguely remember you mentioning it (I may be wrong), but you were putting him in there to keep the larve population under control, right?

That's awesome, what a fun summer he had, ahhh the stories he could tell ^_^
I know of several people raising juvies in their ponds and they say the same thing about the color being amazing. I'd like to try it someday.

That's VERY cool. I'd like to see the photos of him. He sounds lovely.

They really do look better after living outside for a while, I believe. I had a few of my juvies in our big clay dog water bowl outdoors to eat mosquito larvae, but when I put them back in the growout tanks I apparently missed one who was perfectly camouflaged... found her a few weeks later. I didn't feed her anything during the time she spent there obviously, since I didn't know she was there, but she's actually larger and more colourful than the others right now... extremely healthy!
