PIcked up my 3 new fish today. A GT, banded red-headed midas and an H.carpintis escondido.
Got them home and into the tank. It's already quite clear to me that the Texas is not gonna cope. It's rather tatty, and has obviously been bullied in the tank in his old home. He's also underfed. As large cichlids go, I think he's pretty placid, whioh is why he's been picked on.
The GT is chasing him already. Is anyone able to give th Texas a home ? He is available for free. COuld be an absolutely superb specimen in the future. He's already a fair size, about 8", but thin.

I'm near Southampton. New owner would need to collect. PM me if you're interested.

I'll have to see if I can give him to a shop in a couple of days if no-one here can help.

Hiya, your best bet is a shop, no one seems to want these (its why I still have mine). I am a little worried you say thin, they are not bulky like flowerhorn or gt's they are quite a slender fish. Have you a pic so I can see, sorry I cant help I couldnt get to you to take him.

Yes, thin as in a bit of a sunken stomach.

Here's the pic. I don't think he has much of a chance long-term in with the other two. he seems confident enough with me though.

How can people let their fish get like this, such a shame...I assume he came from an LFS somewhere?

I hope he finds a home soon and preferably a domestic one where he can be fed lots in peace

He was part of a breeding pair for quite a while. The breeder is completely downsizing his operation, then the Carp's mate died, and he was just stuck in a 55 along with a load of other largish cichlids. So he has been pretty stressed out for a while.
I hope that a quiet, peaceful tank, with some decent food would pick him right up. It's just that I can't give him that environment. I have one tank with a 9" flowerhorn in, who would kill any fish put in with him. And the other tank is the one with the Midas and GT in, so there's no peace around here any more !
Just don't have a spare tank big enough to put him in, not even temporarily.
Tomorrow, I've going to look around for a cheap, big plastic tub that I could put him in temporarily to build him up. I have a spare filter and heater but not a "tank", as yet.

Hamfist, if it is any help, here is an offer for you to "chew" on...

Do you want to drive over to my place in Bitterne and loan Nelly's old 5x2x2 for a few months, to hipefully nurse him back to health?

My Toyota can fit either the tank or cabinet in, if your vehicle can take the other ;)

My mad idea of hooking up electric to our garage is going to cost too much, especially when we are currently looking to find a ground floor rented flat, so the tank is literally just sitting down there at the mo.

Hope you have luck rehoming it.

On another note, are you sure its an escondido? It may well be stressed but to my eye that doesn't look like one to me.

The breeder who sold it to me is certain it is an escondido. I am sure that it's current undernourished and stressed state is the reason for it's completely washed out look.

It's really kind of you to offer that, but in reality I just have nowhere to put a 5x2x2. Not in my house, or in the shed. The tank's just too big.

Actually, some slightly better news today. Things are more peaceful in the tank today, and the carpintis is definately not getting chased anywhere near as much. I might leave him where he is for the moment.

Fair enough on the tank, but let me know if things change. Good news on the relative tranquility resumation!

Glad its settled down, I keep looking at the pic of the texas and then my brutes, I just feel so sorry for him. So glad you have him now and can feed him up some. :good:

Still very peaceful this evening, but the Carpintis has no interest in any of the food I tried.

Will persevere.
