I added a gold severum to my tank today and my Texas cichlid has already taken a piece out of his tail. The bloke at my lfs told me they would be fine together so I took his advice as he is normally very good.
Will the Texas cichlid keep nipping until death or is it just a nasty hello and letting the severum know who's boss?
I have a spare tank to seperate them if i have too but only if i have to.

The texas is a much more aggressive fish than the severum. Which is bigger? Your best chance for these 2 to coexist is to remove the texas, rearrange the decor in the tank, and reintroduce the texas after a few hours. This will alter its territories. The texas has already established the entire tank as his domain, and this new fish is coming in unwelcomed!! Give it a shot, if it doesn't work one of them will have to be removed.

BTW how big is this tank?

Thanks for your reply impur, The texas cichlid is about five inches long and the severum is about three, The tank is an 80g. The Texas hasn't really been chasing him today so I think ill see how they go over the next day or two and if he is still chasing ill move one, Thanks again.

Ahh at that small you will probably be ok. The texas was just asserting his dominance of that area of the tank. Any pics for us?
