i have a tetratec filter thats been running fine for months now, i've changed the pads once etc....only this morning i found it wasn't working at all....i've taken everything out and had a look, declogged most of the dirt too, it all looks ok from what i can see...what could the problem be and how can i sort this out!?

is this a job for a new filter?

thanks, any help would be appreciated!

When you say 'not working', does that mean, that the pump isnt running and flowing water through the filter? or that the filter is not removing ammonia, nitrites and the such?

if its the first, then yes, its just more economical to go buy a new filter instead of buying a replacement motor (if you even can).

if its the later, then if you changed all of your filter media at once, then you threw out most of the bacteria as well and your tank will need time to re-cycle. Whenm you change the media, only change about half of it at a time as it will leave some bacteria to seed the new media as well leave bacteria to deal with the current waste of the tank so it doesnt spike and kill are your fish.

if you mean something else entirely, then please specify, thanlks

The Tetratec externals are fabulous beyond words. If my cabinet cupboard had been tall enough, I'd have had the 1200, as it happens the 700 fits in with 4mm to spare at the top. You won't be disappointed. I wouldn't use the bag of carbon that's supplied with it, though.

They are good. I bought the Ex700 and it is great, I noticed visibly clearer water in a day and my fish seemed more happy and active. After that I bought the Ex600, I haven't tried Ehiems, but a lot of people say Tetratecs are better.

If you're in the UK, Zoo-plus is good. Zoo-plus

Cheers...

I think the UK (at least) tetratecs came with 3 year warrentee, worth checking if yours has failed.

well i had a word with the shop...they suggested opening the compartment where the impellor is....i had looked everywhere else, unscrewed the bottom etc....i found one of the most horrible suprise that a small bristlenose i had bought just days before had been sucked through the hole filter and ended up jamming the impellor, not a pretty sight if you don't like seeing your fish like that, which obviously i dont!!

its been one of those weeks where everything seems to be against me with the fish, although the results i've seen far outweigh the unlucky experiences.

i've done a 30% water change and will do another small one today as well as testing the water...there doesnt seem any other problems and the filter is working better than ever now.

glad you sorted that out.....happens to us all....in my jewel tank i was cleaning out filter had the pump section in water and my betta found his way in.....didnt think about that until to late.....

thanks bout replys on tetratec 1200.....getting it tomm as somthing cropped up.......

yes i wont be using the carbon.......stupid me brought a large tub of carbon a couple of months ago then a couple of weeks after adding carbon in my fluval 4o3 i got hilth appear with my oscars...darn......since removed it adding filter wool instead.....water changing 1/3rd daily heating up a notch.....read up since then apparently carbon contributes to hole in the head.....

Sadly, that's one of the laws of fishkeeping: if a fish CAN fit somewhere then, sooner or later, it WILL.
I'd still buy a Tetratec external, though.
