I'm buying another filter has a present for me from my dad :hyper: ,i like tetratecs ( i have the ex700 & ex1200) but wouldn't mind trying an eheim classic 2213 external(up to 250 litre tank) but wasn't sure if this would be overkill on a 10 gal tank.... or settle for the tetratec ex400 for upto 80 litre tank...

What do you lovely peeps reckon please???

Sounds like a mega-overkill for a 40 litre aquarium..

Out of two same-rated filters, I would personally always go for the Eheim.. but putting a 250 litre-rated filter on a 40 litre tank is asking for trouble as most fish would not be able to cope with that.

Thanks kitty kat, you've help me make up my mind  i've decided on the tetratec 400 , plus the tetratec for £5 more has taps whereas the eheim classic hasn't unless purchased separately... :)

 thanks Vaegavic, but i think that one, although a good price would definately be overkill on a 10 gal, which i have my 2 new gouramis in,they might get pinned to the side with the flow

Thanks anyway :good:

I would always go for Eheim over anything else. There are some great deals online, I got mine from Coxwell Aquatics online store and it was a lot cheaper than elsewhere. It came with all the media, taps, hoses and accessories and although mine was the 2224, the 2215 plus is only £68.95. It did take a while to arrive as they had a problem with their supplier or something but otherwise for price they were good.
I don't work for them btw!

Hmm, gouramis? I would think that even the other filter might be too strong for them..

Sorry to hijack, i'm in a similar situation. I'm also looking to get an Eheim 2213 Plus. My new tank is 15USg (2ft long), would that be overkill?

15g tank, 115g/hr turnover, that's 7.6x turnover. The product says for tanks between 40-65g.

I'm thinking it's maybe too much, but have heard so many good things about the filter.

Also, always try to remember that flow stated is the max, without any media, just with the pumps running in water.
After you add media and pipes etc, it does slow down a bit.

Always over filter.
My betta (which are renowned for needing no currents) absolutely loves his 300lph filter in his 15L tank.

awesome thanks guys. my first ever external it is then!

what's the rule about externals and their relationship to the tank? should they always be kept below water level? i'm intending to keep mine on the same surface as the tank itself. what would happen if say, you kept your external on a shelf ABOVE the tank? Does that just mean less effort for the motor?

The external filter should be at the level of the tank or below. If it is above the tank, it would be having to pull the water in, instead of push it out as it normally does. I would think the way the pump is built, it would not work as well that way.
