Hi again ppl of fish forums! ive decided 2 get tetras! yay. anyways, im gona get some different tetra (could u tell me different types of tetra?) and put them in my new CLEAN 10gal tank! heres some questions for u: 1.) how many tetra can be in a 10gal tank? (i kno they like 2 school), 2.) are they compatible with other fish? (guppies for example cuz i hav a lonly male guppy in a 5gal, and wut types of fish), 3.) do tetras breed? (if so, do they lay eggs or r they livebearers, and how long does it take, and how many does it make), 4.) can u tell if tetras r boys or girls? (if u can, how do u tell), 5.) can tetra live with different types of tetra?, 6.) do bigger tetras eat smaller tetras? , 7.) how long do i hav 2 cycle my tank b4 gettin the tetra? , and 8.) if guppies r compatible with tetra, wut other fish r compatible w/ tetra that wont harm the guppy? Plz respond 2 the new time (almost) tetra owner! Thnx! -heart  , ally86ozzy

most smaller tetras will be fine with guppy's, should geet a few more guppy's to go with that lonely male, tetra's would be fine with most fish that are going to fit in an 10 gal tank, yes tetras are compatible with different types of tetras, you want a group of atleast 6.

As for boys & girls question,.... mostly in all tetras, exclusively the plumpness of the body.....Do they breed.... Off course they breed...... mostly egg scatterers (not live bearing) How often/ how long / how many... varies between different species.... Can breed weekly..... about 30hours to hatch... fry hang onto glass pane for about 1.5 days & then free swimming (very minute) . numbers vary beween 90 to about 400....Bigger tetras (or any fish) do eat smaller ones...... Various fish are compatible with tetras.... Even most gouramis..... (So many questions, so little space.) This is a summary of your concerns.....

3. Yes Tetras breed, they lay eggs
4. Some times yes, some times no (In Neon Tetras females tend to have a more triangular shape belly, as well as having the blue band bend upwards to some degree. Males having a noticeably flatter belly, compared to the females).
6. No, but they may bully them
7. A tank should at the very least cycle for a month (see http://www.fishforums.net/content/New-to-t...hless-Cycling/)
8. IMO for a 10G, i would have in it 4 Otos, 10 Neons and 1 Dwarf Gourami

Hope This Helps

my brother says they only sell males in stores cuz the ppl dont want u to go home and breed them. is that true? also, how big r otos and gouramis, cuz i need swimmin space, . but y do u hav to cycle ur tank 4 a month?? ive heard of at least a week, but..... A MONTH?! whatever. anyways, plz respond! -heart  , ally86ozzy

1. Its rubish that stores only sell males
2. Otos grow to around 3cm (http://www.theaquariumwiki.com/Otocinclus_macrospilus)
3. Dwarf Gouramis around 6cm This would be your Centre Piece (http://www.theaquariumwiki.com/Dwarf_Gourami)
4. Yes a month, you need the bacteria in the filter to grow (see http://www.fishforums.net/content/New-to-t...hless-Cycling/)

I really think a week is more than enough time before adding 'em..... but I have to qualify this, it is only my experience & I don't have updated books on the subject....... (I normally don't wait more & 2 days)

i dont kno how 2 cycle and ive never cycled my tanks, all my fish r fine. the most ive done is let my water sit and stabilize itself, i dont get how to cycle, and yes i read that link u guys gave me, it didnt help me. can u explain to me how 2 cycle? thnx. -heart  , ally86ozzy

This "cycling" concept is a relatively new "buzzword"...... I,ve been keeping fish since the early 1970's, and never bothered with it to no detriment.....Some people nowadays swear by it, but I still ignore it and have no greater success or failure than the average. So (honestly) "in my opinion" I ignore this and keep my fish as I see fit. (please note, that this is not my advice to you, but merely a statement). My motto is.... "the more you worry about them, the more you lose".....fish are a lot more durable than most people give them credit for.

o BTW Ludwig, i liked ur banner so much, i clicked on it and made my own! here it is:

dont u like it? so do i hav 2 cycle. or can i not? heart  , ally86ozzy

personally i wana get my fish ASAP and that doesnt include cycling, like u said Ludwig, i have no better success or failure from it, therefore not finding it nesessary. -heart  , ally86ozzy

BTW (this is my own quote)

i only hav one guppy currently and dont wana put him with other guppies (for reasons u dont need 2 kno, but if u PM me and sware not to tell ill tell u) and my bro said he wont school w/ the tetras he'll keep 2 himself, but i dont want him 2 B lonly anyways. Im probably gonna get 5 neon tetras, put my guppy with them, and get 1 cardinal tetra (this is an experiment, i wana see if he'll school with the other tetra, cuz neons and cardinals look a little alike). So this will be my tank setup. will it work?

Yes... It's very prominant, but credit for mine goes to Shelaghfishface who kindly did it for me.....

I'm not going to say "cycle" or do not "cycle", as I've been taken to task before for "giving the wrong advice to the detriment of beginners".... I will however say, that I will not bother about it and (if anything) add my fish maximum 2 days after filling it (if not after 3 hours), but please.... I stress!!...... do not take this as Gospel..... It is only in my experience.....

im probably gona fill my tank today as well as get the filter and air pump and also maybe light set up today, and maybe (hopefully) get my fish 2morrow or sometime next week. i dont really wana cycle, anyways i dont get the concept of cycling, cuz in the wild these fish would live in ridiculous conditions and B able 2 survive still, as im sure river, ocean, and lake water doesnt hav perfect ph, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and so other many stats. i dont want my fish 2 die, but they dont die in the wild, so...... ? -heart  , ally86ozzy

I see no problem with that girl, but PHULEEZ!!! remember it is at your choice and not by my advice....
