can i mix different tetras together like 1 neon,1 black neon and 2 glowlight or should i just stick with one type

They will live happily together (provided they have the space), but will not live happily in those numbers. All three are shoaling fish which appreciate the company of their own kind. You should aim for at least 6 of each, so if you don't have the space for at least 18 fish, then it'd be better to go for just one type.

On their own, they will become timid and maybe stop eating and die because they need the security of a group (of the same species, not just a group of any tetra)

Its best to have pals for your neon tetras, we bought 6 and 4 died, leaving just two, they seemed okay going roun together but a bit lonely. We bought more (making 7 in total) and they seem alot happier and livelier.

Like idle said, get at least 6 of the same species type.

BTW, what size tank do you have jodie? All depends on tank size on what type of fish you can get and how many.
