Also known as the red eye puffer, although there are several other species often sold as red-eyes too, so be careful. Also known as the crested puffer as the threat/mating display includes the fish erecting a ventral crest of skin.
A small but aggresive puffer which is unusual in that the males and females look utterly different.
Best kept singley or in different sex pairs. Never keep odd numbers. (other than one)
Fiercely territorial, they will often attack and kill any fish of any species that strays into their space. For this reason tankmates are unwise.
what about figure 8 puffers then? The store sells them as well, as do they dwarf puffers. I do prefer the red eyes, but I would like to keep an algae eater in the tank as there is always alot of the algae, and takes for ever to clean do it being under my 55 and not having much spaceabove it, though I can take the top off, but with no light it is hard to see as it is dark.
I'm with Fish00 on this one.
Three or maybe 4 dwarfs and a couple of small plecos like rubberlips or bristlenoses.
You could also add some freshwater bumblebee gobies if you can find them.
I did see fresh water ones at the petshop in my mall not so long ago, they do have a semi bad fish department, but these fish did live there for at least two months. They were probebly all bought.
Also, what would be a good food for them? I am hoping to get them wednesday, though I am not sure because my kribs would eat the guppies if I put them in the 55 gallon with them. And I know puffres are fin nippers.
i've never had kribs so dont know too much about them, but if theyre inclined to eat other smaller fish (as indicated by your concerns that theyd eat your guppies), and could fit a dwarf puffer in their mouths then i'd be inclined to say it might be risky to both the kribs and the dp's. plus theres always the worry of the dwarf puffers taking chunks out of your kribs and injuring or even killing them that way.
The puffers will almost certainly kill the kribs.
Lorteti Puffers in particular demonstrate aggresion & threat by displaying their red bellies and will attack anything they perceive as a rival displaying puffer.. that is anything with a red belly....like kribs....
Be warned that you may find your kribs eviserated in their sleep one night.
yes good point about the red bellies and lortetis - i have teaspoons with red handles and my red-eye puffer erects his ventral and dorsal ridges in response if i put it near the tank!!
the response to the red wont be a problem with dwarfs, but if you value your kribs, then i wouldnt put any sort of puffer in with them just in case tbh
well, it was with the dwarfs. I may though just do a NW cichlid tank in the 55 and put the platties and smaller catfish I own in the 20 instead, though I would prefer puffers.
