So ive just been to my lfs and asked for his advice... but thought id get a second opinion, im currently in the process of starting up a new tank (i say new...its all been used before (for a goldfish)but just about to clean all the gravel, get some clean water and start from scratch with a heater as i want a few smaller tropical fish which i assume will be more suited toa 20 litre tank..

so i bought some tetra safe start, just wondering if this will work as effectivley as doing a usual cycle? i really dont want to needlessly have fish die so i want to just make sure that using this will be ok as opposed to a usual cycle process.

Most of those products that claim to contain nitrAte, usually don't. The only one that actually works is Bio-Spira. I'm sorry, but you just wasted your money.

Some members on another forum swear by it a lot of people on this site says it junk even though more then likely they have never used it. Bio-spira if you did find some for freshwater wouldn't work seeing how they stopped making it sometime ago so it would have expired by now. I would say with the tetra stuff might work and it might now. I can say however that it won't do any harm so to say. Now with this stuff what your suppose to do is add it add fish then wait 10 days then your tank is suppose to be cycled. Now if it was me I wouldn't risk it. The reason I say this is your fish are still going to be in a tank with lethal amounts of ammonia and nitrites. If after 10 days you tank is still cycling then you've wasted your money and your now in a fishin cycle. I would just go with a fishless cycle because its easier on the wallet, fish, and you

Long story short, the only "bacteria in a bottle" product that has been proven to work was Bio-Spira, however, it is no longer available for freshwater, only for marine tanks. Tetra Safe start is a product similar in theory to Bio-Spira except that it does not need to be refrigerated, however, you should know that it is still temperature sensitive, at any point from the manufacturer to your door if the product got too hot or too cold the bacteria would have died and it won't work. That being said, it won't hurt anything to use it. Since you have already purchased it, go a head and use it if you want to, or you can return it. Some people have had great success with it while for others it did not do a thing. The bottom line is it MIGHT work, if, and only if, all temperature precautions were taken through out its shipment process from the manufacturer to you door. If you do choose to use it, and you do not use the entire bottle, it is advised that you keep the open bottle in the fridge to get the longest possible shelf life. You also want to shake the bottle up well before use as the bacteria tend to settle at the bottom of the bottle. You may be lucky and be in the group that it works for, but don't expect miracles ... it most certainly will NOT (despite its claims) cycle you tank overnight.

Edit: As an additional note, I have tried two products similar to Bio-Spira, Dr. Tims One and Only, and most recently Tetra Safe Start. I have a 10 gallon tank with a small sponge filter I was trying to cycle for use in a QT tank (I have since moved the sponge filter to an established tank where it will stay until it is needed). At any rate, as I had no luck with Dr. Tims I thought I would try Tetra Safe Start, again I had no luck. You can use either of these products with a fish less cycle, however, you need to vary your approach. If you use either of these with a fish less cycle you need to only dose your tank to 2ppm initially, then slowly (very slowly) increase to 4ppm. Again neither of the products hurt my cycle, but neither sped them up. There is another product, called Nite-Out II, I have not used the product my self, but there was a member on this forum that was having an extremely difficult time with her cycle, and she used the product and it worked, she did not follow the directions exactly, you are suppose to dose the tank several times over a period of 2 weeks with Nite-Out, but she just dumped the entire bottle in the tank. Not sure if this was an isolated case or if the product actually works. But as for Tetra Safe Start, it did not work for me, but it didn't hurt anything either.

I know this is an old topic but I found this board while doing some research on Tetra Safe Start.

Since this thread was near the top of Google results for this product when I searched for it, I thought maybe others doing the same might need updated information.

This may have been clarified in other topics, but for the sake of this thread.... Spectrum Brands which purchased Marineland Labs, the company that makes bio spera. In turn, Tetra is owned by Spectrum Brands and they took over the production of bio-spera for marine. Their safe start under the Tetra label still has the same bacteria that bio-spera does, as mentioned, they just developed it be viable at room temp. instead of needing to be refrigerated. Safe start is distributed under the same patent as bio spera.

So it's not different and it wasn't a waste of money.

I've used Safe Start and it works great. The reason I was researching it was because I had only recently heard of bio spera and was comparing the two when I learned the above. I'm by no means an expert and haven't used it a lot but so far SS has worked great on two tanks.

seemed to work in my 190 but I have an established filter running along side the new one and used SS. So I had a 2 in 1.

You're better buying some household ammonia and doing the fishless cycle from there. I was skeptical of this at first too and I am currently a week in in my cycle doing it this way and so far its according to plan.
