Our water is pretty hard and I had heard Tetra Easy Balance would help with the PH and with phosphates. It is a liquid. On reading the instructions it says to use in water with good oxygenation and an air stone is essential. I don't have an air stone but have a Marineland 170 at one end of the aquarium (it is a 29 gallon) and a Whisper (made for 10 gallon) at the other end. Will this work instead of an air stone and if not, what do you think would happen if I put the Easy Balance in?? I put a PH adjuster (powder kind, different brand) in a ten gallon before and it made the water look like milk and the filters never could clear it out. I had to change the whole thing.

Personally, I'd never attempt to try to change the pH or water hardness, except by gentle means (such as by using tufa rock or bogwood). There is far too much danger of killing your fish through random pH fluctuations and I haven't actually heard a good reason to use such chemicals since most fish can adapt to different pH's (not discus, obviously, but you'd be surprised at the fish that can adapt).

I have some of that stuff and it scared the piss out of me after I read the back of the bottle, something about not changing your water for 6 months etc etc...
It may be fabulous but.....it seems risky to me -_-

I use it cause it keeps my algae under control in my goldfish tank...... before it was driving me mad but now it has reduced alot....i still do a weekly wate change.....6 mons no water change can't see it personaly to risky

Most chemicals that change water (pH or the hardness of water) add something to the water. And you have to keep adding the chemical to the water to keep the parameters the same so you can get huge buildups of chemicals that can affect your fish and end up being a bigger problem than adjusting the fish to your local water conditions.

Thanks everybody! My fish seem to be thriving so I think I will not mess with the water at this point. They make it sound so easy in the big print on the bottle and then when you read the fine print on the back you find out it is not that easy after all. Lesson learned - read the fine print before you shell out the money.

I have been using Easy Balance in my 20 gallon, and i really like it! Due to alot of evaporation, I am always adding new treated water, and it seems to really work. I always clean my gravel every 4 weeks, and i have crystal clear water. It also really helped on keeping the p.h. leveled out, which is a really big help. So in my opinion, I must say that I really like the Easy Balance, but I can understand the fear in using it! But it does help on keeping the water leveled out. :fish:

Do you keep an airstone running like it says to on the bottle? It says you need good oxygenation but I was hoping the power filters would create enough oxygen. That is why I hesitate to use it- I don't run an airstone.

I have a 3-way bio-filtration pump, and a 6 inch airstone placed at the bottom of the tank, it really seems to be working good. I also use aquarium salt on all my fish, 1 tablespoon for every 5 gallons of water. it is inexpensive, and gives the fish lots more energy, and color. They seem to just love the salt in the water, and my p.h and nitrates are all normal also. Happy fish-keeping!!! P.S. Make sure that you have an air pump that is of adequate size for your tank... I had a 5 gallon air-pump at first, and had to go buy a bigger one, cause it wasn't putting out enough bubbles. The fish love to play in the strong bubbles, or mine do anyway!
