Is it really necessary to check all these levels? I haven't been doing that so far and both of my tanks have cycled. Lots of fish died in my first tank :-( due to faults of my own, but none of my fish died in there.

What do you think? Should I buy these just in case?

You really should have them just in case. Once you have cycled tanks, you will use the NirtAte test the most to keep track of your tanks health. But, if anything odd happens, you will want to be able to test everything. If you go ahead and get them, you wont' have to run out and buy them later. :)

Personally I think that an Ammonia and a Nitrite testing kit are as important to have as the filter and the heater, its and instant indication that something has gone wrong or the tank is having problems, instead of having to try and rush water samples to the lfs etc.
