Hey,

We had some awful news about our little Pug puppy yesterday The breeder saw her at a show last friday and suggested we get her back x rayed as she was slightly wobbly in her backend - Just to make sure she's ok... Anyway, we had the x rays done yesterday and its really bad news :-(

Delilah has a bent spine (scoliosis), fused vertebre (T1 - T6) and has Hemi-Vertebre in 3 vertebre (T7-T9). We're taking her to see a spinal surgeon on Tuesday but they are reluctant to do surgery on such a small dog so they will probably refuse anyway, but even if they did its such a big op for a tiny, baby dog - Major spinal surgery :-(

The HV is the worst thing. two of the verterbre are pushing the middle one upwards, if there is too much pressure they will push it right up and sever the spinal cord, which would paralyse Delilah. The operation would put a plate over the vertebre to stop that happening.

We have such a hard decision to make now - Risk the surgery, which could very well kill her anyway. It may give her many more years, or it may only give her a couple of months, we wont know more until we speak to the surgeons, but its such a huge risk. The other option is to just let it happen and have Lil put to sleep once she becomes paralysed. People have said she could live happily like that but i couldn't do that to her, having her drag herself around like a seal, or in a harness with wheels? No way...

Anyway, i just thought i'd tell you guys as its just do devestating for us. Delilah is such a sweet little puppy, i couldn't imagine being without her now. The breeder is feeling really bad too, although both parents were x rayed and dont have the disease (HV). She is giving us another puppy, but its just not going to be the same. Delilah has done so well in ehr 2 month show career too, she qualified for Crufts 3 times already, its just wrong.. Only 8 months old too..

That's just aweful :-( let us know how it goes. Tough choices though :/

Poor Delilah! I hope everything turns out okay, stay strong! :flowers:

Poor puppy, how awful. I know how you are feeling as we have just made the hardest decision ever for our cat, even though I know in my heart it was the right thing to do.

I'm sure you will make the right decision also for Delilah. Whatever happens you can be proud of her being a happy little pup and having a great life whilst in your care. I hope everything works out for you all.

awwww poor thing, that's awful :-(

tough choices to make, sure you'll see your way to doing the best for little delilah in the end. Try to stay positive though, she could go on for years and years and have a lovely happy life even without the op. Or she could have it and it be a complete sucess. Good luck and I've got my fingers crossed for you :good:

Poor delilah, and poor you, a hard decision to make, I hope which ever you decide will be the best one for her.

Keep us informed.

(between you and Bex, it's been an incredibly sad morning)

I hope it works out for you

Awww poor Delilah.... That is awful news, cant the surgery be postponed until she's a bit older?

I hope everything works out and that little Delilah is ok.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Its going to be a really hard decision, but it will hopefully be a bit easier once we've spoken to the surgeon, if he says no then we'll do everything we can to keep her healthy for as long as possible :)

The surgery, if she has it, would have to be done asap. With the HV, the more the spine grows and puts pressure on the affected vertebre the sooner it could push up and sever her spine, if she's going to have it done she'd have to have it soon as the vertebre are very close to pushing right up :/

We are going to pick up the other puppy tonight. I dont really feel all that excited about it though. It will be nice to have another pug to show, but the only reason we're getting her is because something so awful has happened to Lilah so its not really a very happy occassion. Hopefully we'll all cheer up when we see Lilah and her new sister playing together though! :D

Oh boy, I'm very sorry about your puppy! I'd be terrified if he was mine! If your puppy does get the surgery, I hope it's a complete sucess and he many non-pain filled years.
