I'm wondering if I could use expanable foam insulation, or foam, or something like that too make a background in a terrarium or vivarium.

I'm pretty sure in my travels through this vast and endless cyberspace we call the internet that I've read about someone doing that.
Any thoughts, ideas, or advice?

no it can't be used
what you want is NT Laboratories Spraydekor it is a non-toxic foam that hardens to a rock like finish to create coves, filter covers, coral reefs and backgrounds. A 500ml cannister will cover 1.5m at 1 inch thickness.

Best Thing I could suggest is if you do want to use it then make sure you paint it with a non toxic sealant after it has set. and don't miss any bits. Probably do at least double the recommended coats.

I have used a product called Pondflex which worked great. Its a non toxic paint for concrete fish ponds to re seal if they crack with will seal your back ground to.

The other option is instead of using an expandable foam try using some polystyrene and taking to it with a blow torch. Has a nice look. still needs to be sealed with a non toxic paint but is a lot more fun to create cause you get to play with fire. :D

(yes, "day".
