So I broke up some "Terra Cotta" plates to build some caves. Unfortunately, these aren't Terra Cotta all the way through. Anybody know what this is and if it's safe for my tank? It's definitely much harder than the Terra Cotta. I put vinegar on it and no sizzle so I guess it passes that test. Anybody?

I have no clue about that, Perhaps your best bet is to go to a homebase/BnQ (UK) and buy some of the terrcotta plant pots for 99p and smash them up. I know they're terracotta all the way through.

It could be the way its fired, after all the terracotta army is that greyish colour. I went to a factory in Xi'an where they make the replicas and they're actually all grey too hmmm interesting though.

Thats was the same as when i made my pot caves, they've been in the tanks since the start of the year with no effects on the fish or water. they were the cheapo ones from hombase

Generic base clay i guess

Topped with terra to keep prices down and profits up ;)

Nowt to worry about as said
