My husband and I were at out local Wal-Mart last night, checking out the fish, when my kids said, "look mommy, that fish has a heart" I looked in the tank and there were about 20-25 ballon mollies (if I remember correctly) that were "tatooed". It was the strangest thing I have ever seen! As I am new the wide world of fish, I was wondering if this was some kind of man-made "breed" or what. Any help?

Also I have a 20 gallon tank w/2 white mollies, 2 dalmation mollies, and 2 mickey mouse platy, how many, (if any at all) guppies my tank couls support? (and how many male/females should I get?)

here's some info on dyed/tattoo'd fish

it's a truly cruel and horrible practice

there's a few methods, some people will change the colour of the fish by dipping them in a type of acid and then in some dye, or they can be literally tattooed and i think the method is not disimlar to you or i getting a tattoo

sadly thousands of fish die at the mercy of these horrible people all the time, i'd strongly urge you to not give your business to this store and find somewhere else to buy fish from

Please Please avoid these fish, to get 20-30 fish alive to the shops about 2-300 fish would of been tattooed in the first place, but dure to infections and stress most would of died .......

Oh my, I had no idea!!!  That is horrible!!! There were several with multi color stripes, and polka dots, and a few with hearts....... Poor lil' babies!!!

poor lil' babies indeed

i'm so sorry that this was the introduction to fish you and your family have had, unfortunately as with every hobby it has it's ugly side.

however on the plus side your in the right place to get yourself informed and make sure that you are one of the good guys and keep your fish happy

While the fish look normal other than their physical appearance, their lives are shortened because of this process. It's a shame as there are so many beautiful fish that are natural.

sorry do i understand correctly, they are not just coloring fish now but putting little signs etc on them, disgusting.............

arrrrrrhhhhhhh thats cruel i love my fish the people who do that should be ashamed

really cant see why fish cant be included in the laws that prevent cruelty to animals

Nick

i totally agree!!!! i fish is an animal therefore should come under the blanket law of animal cruelty. if someone was shaving kittens and tattooing them, someone would be up in arms in no time and an animal cruelty arrest would follow. i think its pathetic that people cant understand that fish are living, breathing, feeling animals who do feel pain and most die as a consequence

Agree, it sickens me every time i try to figure out why fish arent protected by the same animal cruelty laws that dogs and cats and other "furry" creatures are. so sad.....

That is a horrible shame! This what people do just to make money, once the fish leave the store they don't care!!
