They will work in a ten gallon , maybe less if you have 1 pair , they are said to best in groups , like schooling fish
Provide hiding places , many .
I bought 6 , 8 mos ago , now have 4 , and some fry as well .
They are not picky about water params , I keep mine in water just barely on the hard side and PH is neutral or slightly higher , My temp water is 78 or 79 degrees for the most part .
They do like the water clean, by that I mean they won't tolerate nitrate build up [ like most fish ] , reg partial water changes
.
Mine are about full grown , and are just over 2".
They won't eat flakes
, mine love freeze dried blood worms , freeze dried daphnia , and live brine shrimp . They will most likely eat the frozen versions of these foods as well , though I've never offered them any .
If you get both sexes they will breed , this has been my experience , mine seem to breed nonstop , nothing to do with longer days , water changes or anything like that , they go
, I have noticed that the clutches of eggs look larger after feeding live food .
If you find them get them , they will make good addition to most community tanks.
Not hard to keep .
Edit just read more replies , never kept 1 by itself , I could work , I'm not sure , I go by what I've read here , books , and what I see in my tank . Usually the males are the Territorial ones and the females more social , and my males stand up to my apisto , my apisto's a big dude compared to the smaller gudgeons , but it doesn't seem to matter , at any rate aggression is minimal and seemingly harmless .
I paid about $9 each[ NY] / cometcattle had seen them in ashop near him for more than twice that [ Chicogo area ]
