USA,
what is the tempermate of these? Also what tank size do they need. I am in the market for a peaceful yet very colorful fish for my brother. This one is quite lovely.

Lovely fish, I have three and lucky62 and Sir and Lady Minion have them too. Temprement is peaceful, though they are terratorial (according to my research, but havn't seen any sign yet) when breeding which lucky62 has had some success with. Min tank size is stated as 5g but as they like to be in groups 10g would be better.

Jon

so getting just one wouldnt be a good idea? I want to get him a nice fish, no idea why, but i only want to get him one, as i need my money so I can get me some fish.

You may be ok with one, mine never seem to hang out together anyway, but don't quote me on it. It was on this forum that I found out they like to be in groups.

Jon

They will work in a ten gallon , maybe less if you have 1 pair , they are said to best in groups , like schooling fish :dunno:
Provide hiding places , many .
I bought 6 , 8 mos ago , now have 4 , and some fry as well .

They are not picky about water params , I keep mine in water just barely on the hard side and PH is neutral or slightly higher , My temp water is 78 or 79 degrees for the most part .

They do like the water clean, by that I mean they won't tolerate nitrate build up [ like most fish ] , reg partial water changes  .

Mine are about full grown , and are just over 2".
They won't eat flakes :/ , mine love freeze dried blood worms , freeze dried daphnia , and live brine shrimp . They will most likely eat the frozen versions of these foods as well , though I've never offered them any .

If you get both sexes they will breed , this has been my experience , mine seem to breed nonstop , nothing to do with longer days , water changes or anything like that , they go  , I have noticed that the clutches of eggs look larger after feeding live food .

If you find them get them , they will make good addition to most community tanks.

Not hard to keep .

Edit just read more replies , never kept 1 by itself , I could work , I'm not sure , I go by what I've read here , books , and what I see in my tank . Usually the males are the Territorial ones and the females more social , and my males stand up to my apisto , my apisto's a big dude compared to the smaller gudgeons , but it doesn't seem to matter , at any rate aggression is minimal and seemingly harmless .

I paid about $9 each[ NY] / cometcattle had seen them in ashop near him for more than twice that [ Chicogo area ] :/

i want them for my brothers 20 gallon. But it is up to him if he wants them or not. I would get them, but I am converting my tank to a Tanganyikan tank. I love those shellies, lol.

The tank does have some kribs in it, a breeding pair, but they never breed taht we know of, would they be okay with them? I found them for $4 at frybabies.com. Is that a good price?

jon and the minions would know better about the kribs , I've seem people keeping smaller fish with kribs though .

$4 sounds good , I've never seem them for less than eight any where .

Just make sure the supplier has a good rep , as I got a real bad batch of fish from and online supplier, 16 small fish ,15 died in 2 weeks , 1 lived , once bitten , twice shy , they say .

I'd like to try shellies some day

I have a pair of breeding kribs, a pair of keyholes and 2 pairs of rams in my tank with the peacocks. I have never seen any aggression towards the peacocks, I did lose two peacocks to unknown causes a few days apart (had 5), so it could have been the cichlids when the lights were off :dunno:

[EDIT: Oh and I paid £5.50 (roughly $9) for mine]

Dont worry, I dont think it was them, I think the damage happened post mortem.

Jon

Still , soorry they died . :(

WRS : I've posted some pics of mine in members fish pics .

actually you can call me will, as that is my name, just dont want to get confussed as william, ya know the owner f the place.

I like you fish. they are quite nice. Though i dont think my brother likes them. Not yours, the peacocks in general. But he has till march till decide if he likes them or not.

Well thanks for the info!

Will

O.K. , Will it is , How old is your bro ?Maybe we can help you find with something else ? Does he like the Kribs , If you separate them for a little while they may bread when you reintroduce them to each other, and in that case they might be enough for him , and also in the case this belongs in African cichlids

Did you think I was calling you Jon ? If so , I wasn't , he's the other member offering info , and sorry if I confused you .
In any case , good luck Will .
