i have an oscar but with no tankmates, the people from the petstore told me to get one but im not sure what to get. The tiger oscar had two good tankmates before ( a red oscar and a jack dempsey) its too bad they died in a filter incident overnight. So what tankmate would be good for my oscar (i prefer a cichlid) Any suggestions?

you need to post your tank stats first, however depending on the size the following would be ok IMO

jack dempsey
another oscar would be great
green terror
flowerhorn
silver dollars - whilst these are peaceful fish, ive never had any issues with them with big fish
fire eel - large - not any other types as they tend to get eaten
clown loaches as you will not be able to have corys to clean the gravel 'whatever substrait you have'

ill leave everyone else to comment on other types of fish but this clearly depends on the tank size etc

Yep we just need the tank size ie, gallons, so we can advise which fish you might be able to add, obviously we wouldnt suggest certain or any fish if the oscar was in say 180L tank (not saying thats what you have!). But if you had a 200 gallon tank then the situation would of course be different and you could have a choice of fish.

I'm curious as to this also. I've got an oscar in a 320L corner tank, theres a pleco in there with him but I suspect that the oscar is gonna grow (and is) too fast for the pleco meaning that I may have to remove the plec for protection.

depends on your preference really but there are many options such as

another cichlid: Severum, Jack Dempsey, Firemouth, Convict,
shoal of dithers: Silver Dollars, Tinfoils, Silver sharks
Bottom dwellers: Bichirs, Synodontis, Pims, raphaels,

spesh.. the plec will be fine, theyre as hard as Vinny Jones, im not jokin, they can look after themselves (providing its not a mini plec)

it is a 70 gallon fish tank

Well in certain circles, 75gallon is recommended for one Oscar alone, so I cant recommend any other cichlids as companions Im afraid, however you could get some dithers to liven the place a little, such as silver dollars or tinfoil barbs maybe, but depending on the size of the Oscar, you would need to get these already close to full grown, so they cant fit in the O's mouth. However saying that, if your O is already large, he will see the entire tank as his space and will probably object strongly to any tankmates.

minxfishy pretty much nailed it IMO. i wouldn't add anything except dithers and then only if they're the same size as the oscar
